You, Who's Kind Only To Me - Chapter 14
He added a brief explanation.
“The entire island is equipped with magical devices that make it impassable. Think of it as an…..exitless maze.”
“So, does that mean we can never leave?”
“Not exactly.”
One can break it by finding the core or by using a power stronger than the one binding the barrier. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible either.
‘The price is just high.’
Lucas chuckled inside at the thought and looked down at Ren as he asked,
“Can you walk?”
Ren responded to Lucas’ question with a hesitant nod, as if she was willing to give it a try. She placed her bare foot on the ground.
Crunch. The soft sound of white salt sand shifting beneath her foot was audible.
Ren’s legs seemed translucent as if they had never seen the light before, but they glowed even more ethereally when exposed to the faint light.
It was as if…
“Ah!”
Ren, taking cautious steps like a newborn deer, suddenly stumbled. At that moment, Lucas, who had been watching her closely, reached out like lightning.
When she instinctively opened her tightly shut eyes, she saw a solid body supporting her.
Thump, thump.
Ren felt the warmth radiating from Lucas’s body beneath his thin shirt, the arms around her waist, and the rapid rhythm of a heart whose owner she didn’t recognize. The palpitations against her throat felt strangely sweet.
Tap, tap
“I seem to owe you several times today.”
“…It seems that way.”
When Ren gently tapped Lucas’ arm, he carefully let her go. Under the moonlight, the two of them stood on the salt beach, watching each other for a moment as the waves crashed.
The man slowly turned his back.
“You should get on my back.”
With a lowered posture, he willingly offered his back.
“Is there any way I can repay the favor to you, so I’m not indebted to you anymore?”
“Using me as a substitute for a carriage helps me.”
As Ren secretly grinned and wondered what that meant, she couldn’t help but be hoisted onto Lucas’ broad back. Her view suddenly rose dramatically.
“I’d like to know the reason.”
Thud, thud — The heavy military boots made a distinct sound different from when she was walking. It was a sound not often heard on this remote island, and Ren perked up her ears.
The man was tall, and his body moved steadily compared to before. Through their touching bodies, Ren felt the warmth. The voice she had always found pleasant reached her ears.
“Because time is gold.”
“Then I must be riding a carriage more expensive than gold.”
At that, the man chuckled softly as if he had heard an amusing joke. Ren couldn’t understand why he was laughing and blinked.
“It’s gold, so it’s indeed quite an expensive carriage.”
“…I’m sorry, but I’m broke. I was washed ashore in a storm, and I have nothing.”
Suddenly, Ren, who had become anxious, slapped her own forehead
Little rascal!
Ren remembered a memory from the past.
She was confined to the attic, unable to do anything, and had no way to make a fortune. She received a meal once a day, but it was far from enough to satisfy her hungry stomach.
However hungry she might have been, there was a time when Ren struggled to pick fruit from the tree near the attic window. Unfortunately, she got caught by the local kids passing by. They mocked her as a beggar. One of them even picked up a stone lying on the ground and threw it.
Thwack!
Naturally, the stone hit the ripe fruit, causing it to fall to the ground, damaged.
‘Well, at least there’s one left.’
She touched the crescent-shaped pendant hanging around her neck.
“Should I pay you now?”
Ren rolled her eyes and asked. The man who was carrying her stopped in his tracks, looking bewildered.
“Do you think I’d ask you to pay a carriage fare now?”
“It’s possible.”
“…..Do you think I’m a shameless person who doesn’t even know what chivalry is?”
Not really.
The sea always gives and takes, that’s all.
“If that’s how it sounded, I’m sorry. I just thought that since I don’t have many skills, it might be difficult to increase my debt before I can repay all the favors.”
As she explained, the man who had been silent slowly started walking again.
“You intended to repay it?”
“Yes.”
“Life debts are not easy to repay.”
“That’s why I need to repay them even more.”
With a firm and resolute response, Ren walked along the fog-covered coastline with the man.
“It won’t be easy.”
“That’s why I’m thinking about it right now…..”
Ren sighed softly, lost in thought.
‘What can I do?’
A year had passed since she woke up. It might have been a short time or a long time, but it was a relatively short time to take proactive action.
First of all, the environment wasn’t favorable.
She had been saved twice: once by this man and once by the people on the island. The reason she quietly stayed in the cramped attic room without attempting an escape was that she considered it part of repaying her debt.
Even when the old man had chained her, it was the same.
‘But not anymore.’
Now, that debt had been taken away by someone else.
As she pondered what she could do to repay this handsome man with a pleasant voice, a voice unintentionally captivating like the sea at night caught her attention during the day.
She instinctively tilted her head to listen, like a school of fish chasing the moonlight.
“There is one way.”
“What is it?”
Curious about Lucas’ words, Ren asked. Lucas, with a mischievous feeling for some reason, lifted the corner of his mouth subtly and replied.
“I’m inviting you to my abode.”
“What?”
