Villainous Husband, the One You’re Obsessed With Is Over There - Chapter 138
Chapter 69.2
As we approached the gate, a sudden shout reverberated through the air and I could hear Eden take a deep breath.
“Show me your seal and identify yourself!”
The guard intentionally spoke with a more authoritarian tone.
Eden made a deliberately hoarse voice and held extended the stolen seal—appropriated from Countess Tocino herself, complete with her personal seal. The names were carefully penned using pseudonyms for both Eden and me,
The guard checked the seal.
“You’re not from around here, are you?”
“….”
“You’re not going to answer?”
“We came from the south and left for the north.”
“Why?”
As the questions kept coming, cold sweat began to form on my hands. On the contrary, Eden calmly delivered the lines prepared in advance.
“My grandmother lives alone in the border area. Recently, I was fortunate enough to acquire a house in the lower region, so from now on, I intend to take care of her in the same house.”
“Who is that person behind you?”
‘Oh, please let me go. Please…’
At those words, Eden glanced back towards me and smiled. It was a stiff smile.
“My wife.”
“What does she do for a living?”
“Merchant.”
Eden’s effort to answer as succinctly and flawlessly as possible was admirable. However, the guard suddenly struck the dirt floor with the spear he was holding out of nowhere.
“You’re making me laugh!”
The moment I heard those words, my fingertips went cold. I felt a chill run through my body that was nothing like the chill I had felt just moments before.
I clenched my teeth.
‘I put the bow in a large bag. If things go wrong, I need to pull this out…’
The guard shouted.
“Do you think I’m a fool? What merchant in the world has such a white and beautiful face? Besides, what merchant in the world speaks like you? You must be a low-life scoundrel!”
Another guard interrupted from the side.
“Are you guys criminals, huh? These guys seem suspicious.”
The situation grew increasingly precarious, teetering on the brink of imminent detainment as my mind raced, desperately clinging to shreds of sanity. Could one truly enter a tiger’s den and maintain their composure?
Then, suddenly, a sudden realization dawned upon me.
The guards, although skeptical, did not immediately pounce upon us, nor did they summon reinforcements from the nearby post. It seemed they had yet to make up their minds about us, so perhaps there was a chance to sway their judgment.
“Wait…”
I managed to keep my voice steady.
“Wait, Daniel… honey.”
It was really awkward to say ‘honey,’ but Eden turned around when I called him that. I was very worried that the guards might recognize my voice, but I reassured myself, reminding my anxious mind that in a world devoid of recording devices, it’d be illogical for them to associate my voice with any specific individual.
Even my face, in the midst of darkness like this, would be difficult to recognize as it would be shaded arbitrarily even if a torch was pointed at it.
“How amazing it is that there are people working hard for our Actilus even on nights like this.”
I put my courage forward.
They laughed and looked at each other.
“Your wife knows something.”
Only then did Eden realize how things were going.
“Ah.”
Momentarily, a hint of disdain passed over his face as he cautiously examined them, but it wasn’t enough to cause significant concern. He didn’t hesitate to use any means necessary and didn’t prioritize pride or justice in such matters.
The part about lacking self-esteem and a sense of justice was a good match for me and my partner.
With the guards’ attention fixed upon us, we searched our bodies with the light of our eyes, desperately seeking any sign of money or valuables. I had left most of my jewelry behind, fearing that it would serve as a telltale sign of my identity. Though fortunately, I still had a gold bracelet.
In a swift motion, I unclasped the bracelet, holding it out to the guard with a polite gesture.
“Thank you for your service.”
I offered, accompanied by a deep bow of respect.
“Hmm.”
The guard’s gaze lingered upon the gold bracelet, examining it under the flickering torchlight.
My heart raced, my lips moistening as I silently cursed the situation.
‘B*stard. It’s really gold, so just let us out quickly. I’m the Empress, so do you think it could be fake?’
Despite the burning sensation in my stomach, the guards appeared relaxed, their scrutiny shifting between the intricate details of the bracelet. As they deliberated, eyes transfixed on the object, I plastered a forced smile on my face that wasn’t even visible to them.
“You can try to bite it. It’s pure gold.”
At those words, one of the guards clenched his teeth tightly around the gold bracelet, leaving clear bite marks imprinted upon its surface.
He then nodded toward his colleagues.
My heart pounded in fear that they would ask for more, and then I might really have to fight.
Perhaps Eden thought the same, he rested his hand on his leather-sheathed sword. Thankfully, the guards seemed satisfied with what they had taken from us. Their demeanor underwent a sudden shift, and they suddenly became friendly.
“Ah, Madam. You must have a hard time traveling at night.”
One of them firmly pressed their seal on the identification seal bearing the stamp of Countess Tocino before tearing off the portion that contained our names.
“Good luck.”
With a smile, they opened the gate for me.
I wanted to immediately move forward and spur the horse. However, the fear of arousing suspicion suppressed my desires, compelling me to maintain a facade of composure. I reined in my impatience, with my body tense as we passed through the gate slowly.
The only sounds that broke the silence were the faint crackling of burning torches and the rhythmic beat of our horses’ hooves.
It felt like time was passing very slowly.
Going through the gate itself took less than five minutes, but it felt like an arduous and torturous passage. Finally, with a loud creaking sound, we made it through and the gate closed behind us.
Overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions, tears welled up uncontrollably in my eyes before spilling down my cheeks as I sat astride my horse.
