With sweat trickling down one side of her forehead, Reina cleared her throat out of awkwardness.
Eli then took another step closer to her. He was so close to her that their faces were almost touching.
“Reina.”
Eli asked slowly, gazing down at the woman’s face.
“Everything is the same except for my height. Is it too much?”
‘Do you not have a mirror at home…?’
How could he say that everything’s the same except for his height? The nation’s younger brother, in a blink of an eye, came back as a man.
However, how could she point that out when listening to his voice that’s full of sadness?
“No, Eli. How could that be possible?”
He was right about everything he pointed out, but she still insisted that it wasn’t.
“It’s just that Ellie is sooo cute.”
“……”
“Umm… You know, it’s just that when I saw Ellie… Uh… I imagined what you might’ve looked like when you were younger… I thought, ‘Ah, my rice cake must’ve been this cute’… That kinda feeling…”
“Noona.”
“Huh?”
“Don’t lie.”
“……”
Speechless for a moment, Reina soon shook her head.
“I-I didn’t lie!”
Yes, in fact, it was a lie.
“Really?”
“Yeah! Really. Ellie is just as cute as you, so I thought that maybe everyone in House Jehardt is just cute.”
This, at least, was true.
“I wondered if Ellie is this cute because she looks like my rice cake, so I blanked out a little.”
When listened to closely, the excuse didn’t make sense at all—but maybe it kinda worked because of the nickname ‘rice cake’?
“…Really?”
“O-Of course!”
The look in his eyes, which seemed pitiful but also strangely cold, slowly began to unravel.
“I also thought about it, but it looked like you hated the way I became taller, Noona.”
“Haha…”
“If you’re feeling too uneasy, I thought I should try to get shorter.”
What did he mean, try to get shorter?
‘That’s supposed to just be a joke, right… But you were being serious?’
Chills crept up her spine.
“…I-Is that even possible? And, of course not! How can I feel uneasy around my rice cake?”
The moment she gave her definite answer, his expression finally became relieved. And just in time, there was a small voice that went on to sort this situation out.
“Enai (Eli).”
“Wah…”
Just now, what was that heavenly voice she heard?
“Enai.”
When Reina turned her head, she saw the cute little Ellie who was whining while reaching up her arms. It looked like she wanted to be carried.
“Enaiii…”
Blinking slowly as she yawned loudly, Ellie seemed to be sleepy now after eating her cookies.
“So hecking cute…”
When Reina voiced her thoughts unknowingly, Eli glanced at her again, as if he was waiting for her to say something more.
“…like Elijah, of course.”
Then as though satisfied with that, Eli picked up Ellie and carried her.
‘Gosh… Why am I being so nervous?’
“Noona.”
“Y-Yeah?”
Distracted for a moment, Reina flinched and quickly looked up at Eli. Then, he smirked and took Reina’s hand.
“May I borrow an empty bedroom?”
“……”
Sure, he’s allowed. But… He didn’t have to hold her hand and whisper at her so close.
“And I want to look around your room, too.”
“…My room?”
Smiling, his eyes curved up into gentle arcs. He raised the hand holding hers and smoothed his lips over the palm of her hand, speaking in such a tender voice that it sounded like it’d melt.
“Yes. I’ll show you my room later, too.”
Uh… How am I supposed to react…
It seemed like the relationship she thought she and Eli had was a little different from what Eli had in mind…
* * *
After hanging out with Eli and Ellie all weekend, her brief vacation ended quickly.
“It’s lucky that Eli didn’t cross the line anymore after that, but… Haa… I still have a headache.”
To the point that her worries about Ethan almost went away, she was troubled by how much Eli had changed.
“Seriously, why is everyone doing this to me…”
On top of that, her weekend went by without her being able to relax. It was the dawn of the weekdays once again.
“I hate it. I hate it so much. I hate the weekdays, I hate this situation, I hate everythiiing…”
Even so, she wouldn’t be going to the Ministry of Health today as an intern. She needed to go back to the academy as an earnest student.
She was still very confused by Ethan’s one-eighty shift, so she was kind of glad that she’d be going back to her academy life, which she had been reluctant about before this.
Well, sure, she’d be perfectly glad for the day ahead… if it wasn’t for today’s class being gardening.
With a bright smile on her face, Reina looked up at the sunny sky that had not a single cloud in sight.
“Die, Paul Bohr. Die in excruciating pain.”
Let your little toe be caught at the edge of your bed when you wake up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Shudder in pain because you can’t scream, and then slip on some marbles on the floor and fall. Cry a lot, damn it.
“Or maybe I should just go ahead and kill you, dang punk.”
What she said certainly didn’t match the picturesque scenery around her, but there’s a backstory behind this.
“I already told you that I don’t wanna take that class, but did you seriously sign me up for it anyway?”
A new semester had begun.
During the days that she didn’t go to the ministry for her internship, she still had to take classes. So, she decided to sign up for one with Paul, who had returned from his leave of absence.
And this class, which was making Reina squat in a field right now, was a gardening class that Paul insisted on taking.
“There’s a rumor that Lehman wants to take it, so I don’t wanna.”
“I’ll beat all of them up, Reina.”
“Then I’ll just get cursed at more. Don’t wanna.”
“Ahhh, please? Let’s just take the class, okay? C’moooon. Avoiding the problem isn’t the only answer, hm?”
“My good friendo, avoidance is the only answer. And you have so many other friends! Go take the class with some other kid.”
“But I want to take it with you, Reina. And you don’t have friends to take classes together with other than me, right?”
“…I have Eli though?”
“Eli doesn’t take afternoon classes. And you hardly take morning classes because you always oversleep.”
“…Ugh, but I don’t wanna! I’m not taking it! You take that class alone!”
She certainly refused just like that. Very clearly and very adamantly.
But Paul Bohr was Paul Bohr.
“It’s you, right? Huh? You’re the one who signed me up for this gardening class?!”
“Hehe.”
“’Hehe’? Are you really laughing right now?”
“I’m pretty when I smile.”
“You must seriously have no regard for keeping your life?”
“Let’s just have fun in class, okay? I’ll make sure that Lehman doesn’t do anything to you.”
However, that guy Paul, who assured that he would make sure to block everything, was not here right now. Instead, there’s just ‘Lehman and his guys’ gathered over there.
“Haa… Despair, just pure despair.”
She’s sad that she had to take this class alone, but what’s setting her off the edge was the fact that she’d have to take the class with that group.
Paul had to take another leave of absence all of a sudden because of another urgent situation with the epidemic.
The curses she was letting out right now weren’t the kind that you’d give a friend in good humor. As Reina was perhaps on the precipice of her life’s collapse, she was actually cursing him out in earnest.
