Faced with a situation such as this, she was instantly hit with the recollection of her previous deeds—of flirting freely with one man after another in the past. Waves of shame rose within her again and again.
‘I just have to finish up everything here, then once I return, I’ll need to set everything straight.’
She could no longer use the matter with Lehman and the problem of her transforming hands and feet as excuses to put this off.
“Your Eminence?”
Perhaps worried because she had been muttering something to herself since earlier, the village chief turned away from the villagers she had been talking to and called out to Reina.
“Is something the matter?”
“Ah, no. By the way, there’s much less opposition against quarantining than I originally thought.”
The worst-case scenario she was thinking of was that the villagers would cause a riot while saying that they’re being held under false imprisonment.
And even as she arrived at this place, she kept second-guessing herself whether it was alright to proceed. But, let alone protest, everyone welcomed her with such bright smiles.
“Because we don’t have to worry about our three meals a day, we all feel like every day is Foundation Day.”
Though she was cheerful, the village chief soon hunched her shoulders slightly and expressed her concern.
“Truthfully, that’s what I’m getting worried about. I wonder if I can return to my daily life after having tasted rest for once…”
The village chief was truly at a loss.
“You don’t have to worry about that. After working all your life, it’s perfectly fine to rest for a few days, and I know that it feels just like heaven. Most people will get bored of the vacation soon enough though, and they’d be raring to get back to work after a mere month.”
It was the same as a student. When given a lengthy vacation, some students would be itching to go back to classes. It was fun to rest and relax at just the right amount.
“Anyway, once the situation has been quickly sorted out, and once the field hospital to accommodate the patients is completed, the quarantine period will end. Don’t worry too much, Chief.”
With tears in her eyes, the old woman bowed her head and thanked Reina.
“If you hadn’t come, Saintess… We would have just died without being able to do anything about it.”
At that time, one of the villagers knocked on the door outside.
“Chief, you’re needed outside.”
The village chief and Reina had stepped into a house a little while back, but since it was small, the other villagers were left outside.
“I’ll be back soon, Saintess.”
“Yes, I’ll continue the inspection here.”
After the village chief left, Reina looked around the room again, focusing on her investigation on the plague.
“I don’t think there’s anything unusual here either.”
Her schedule for today consisted of visits to the houses of the afflicted patients—she was trying to find anything that might link the cases. Reina stepped forward where there was a woman who was looking at her with an emotional face.
“Missus, good morning.”
“S-Saintess!”
The woman immediately got ready to drop to the ground and kneel, but Reina swiftly helped the woman up.
“Please, you don’t have to. If you keep doing that, I’ll feel pressured and I won’t come back here again.”
When Reina half-teased her, the young missus nodded quickly, her head bobbing up and down. She tried her best to rein in her reaction, making it not-so-obvious that she was starstruck.
By now, it had already become such a familiar sight to Reina.
“Do you have any lifestyle habits that you do consistently? What do you normally eat? Or, is there anything special that you do on occasion? Feel free to tell me.”
Focusing back on the investigation, Reina asked a string of questions, and the young missus answered in a much calmer voice this time.
“We don’t do anything out of the ordinary. We usually eat warm potato soup for breakfast, then some bread and whatever can be harvested from the field for lunch and dinner.”
“I see. Do you have any lifestyle habits that are different from other households?”
“Well…”
Before long, the conversation between them progressed smoothly, and the young missus tapped her cheek in introspection.
However, she soon shook her head.
“We’re just like any other household, Your Eminence.”
“And your drinking water?”
“All the villagers in Launcer draw water from the well. The water tastes a little fishy, so we make do by drinking it with enca tea. But… It’s the same for all the other families, too. Right, Honey?”
“That’s right.”
After the couple gave their answers while digging through their memories, a girl who’s about seven years old standing next to the young missus tugged her skirt.
“Moooom.”
The little girl had her hair up in pigtails. And, despite her dress being a bit frayed along the hem, she was dressed neatly. Her plump little cheeks were also sprinkled with freckles. With as neat and clean as she was now, it couldn’t immediately be inferred that she was a child raised in a farming community.
‘Besides that, the house is generally tidy.’
Glancing slightly down, Reina examined the condition of the married couple’s fingernails. And, as she had expected, they were well-trimmed and without any grime.
Of course, the girl had a bit of dirt in them, but this could be chalked up to children’s propensity for touching so many things. Even if they’re washed thoroughly, they’d just be grabbing dirty things later on.
‘Maybe they’re just very thorough with their hygiene management.’
As she was considering various possibilities…
The child seemed to be getting quite antsy, even after her mother had told her to stay still and wait. Tugging at her mother’s skirt and protesting, the child spoke up.
“Mom, Mom. Coco’s dead.”
It was something that a child shouldn’t be saying so easily. Reina looked up, startled.
Dead? Who?
“Already?”
The mother, in turn, sighed as though she considered it ordinary.
“Yeah. That’s why we gotta get another coco.”
The mother and daughter talked about someone’s death so calmly that it seemed like they were talking about some game character.
Suddenly, goosebumps rose on Reina’s arms. It suddenly felt trapped, like she had unknowingly walked into a killer’s den.
“Yes, I got it. Really, why do they keep dying so fast these days… Ah.”
While the child’s mother grumbled, her brows furrowed, she looked up and saw just how frozen Reina was right now. Startled, her eyes went wide.
The young missus, with a slight hint of embarrassment, pressed her lips together. Soon after, a soft curve was drawn upon her lips, creating a somewhat strange smile.
Sensing danger instinctively, Reina quickly averted her gaze. And, she reached out to the door in a hurry.
No, she was about to.
However, what came faster was the heavy voice saying this:
“Honey, take that thing out, if you please?”
And the huge, rough shadows of two hands covered Reina completely.
