The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 30
Chapter 30
“If we wait for the doctor, Your Highness might collapse. I will take Your Highness to see the doctor myself!”
With a booming voice, Dominic scooped Gabriella into his arms. “Take us to the doctor’s chambers!”
“Yes, yes! This way…”
As he carried Gabriella away, followed by the maids, Selena stared in disbelief. He doesn’t even treat people like people anymore…? They both fell, but because the Princess was involved, Selena was utterly ignored. It was infuriating.
“Lady Selena, are you alright?!”
“Ah, Lucy.” Thankfully, Lucy, who had fought her way through the crowd of maids, was looking after her mistress.
“Let’s go see a doctor, lady. You seem to have taken quite a tumble.” Lucy worriedly examined Selena, her feet tapping nervously.
It was the first time someone had shown concern for her, and Selena felt a pang in her chest. Lucy is the best. She needs to be better to her.
“I’ll help you up. Lean on me.”
“No, I’m fine, ugh.” As Selena tried to stand up on her own, a sharp pain shot through her wrist. She winced and instinctively clutched her hand to her chest.
“Lady, what’s wrong? Is your wrist hurting?”
“Uh, uh…” Selena groaned, examining her right wrist. Hidden by her sleeve, she now saw that it was swollen and red.
“You must have twisted it when you fell. Let’s go see a doctor, lady.” Lucy, with a troubled expression, helped Selena to her feet.
Selena leaned on her, but instead of going to see a doctor, she turned away. “Wait, Lucy. I just need to check something.”
“But you should get treated first, lady.”
“No, I need to check it now. It’ll just take a moment.”
With her right wrist still clutched, Selena circled the fountain. She carefully examined the broken piece of the statue.
‘The broken edge is very clean. It’s like it was deliberately broken off. And what is this stone?’
She noticed a round stone on the pedestal where the statue had fallen.
‘Could it be that the vase statue was placed on top of this?’
If so, it would explain why the statue had fallen. The base was slightly rounded, so it would be difficult to balance on a similarly round stone.
Selena’s expression grew serious. The stone on the ground couldn’t have climbed the pillar on its own. Someone had placed it there.
‘Was it an attempt on the Princess’s life? Who did it? Why?’ Selena calmly recalled the events leading up to the statue falling.
The Princess and her had been facing each other, with Lucy and the other maids standing ten paces behind them. Then, suddenly, the statue fell. The first person to notice was… Dominic Dixon.
He was the first to yell that it was dangerous. His deep, resonant voice had stood out from the thin voices of the maids, and she remembered it clearly. It even seemed like he had yelled a few seconds before the statue actually fell.
‘How did Sir Dixon get here at that exact moment?’ If Selena hadn’t saved her, Dominic would have definitely saved Gabriella. Because when Selena reached out to the Princess, Dominic was already almost there.
‘And that expression, what did it mean?’ Selena had clearly seen the fleeting expression on his face when he had pushed between her and Gabriella, standing behind the Princess.
It was a mixture of anger, frustration, bewilderment, annoyance, and regret, a strangely rigid expression.
‘It wasn’t because he was worried about the Princess getting hurt.’
He seemed surprised by Selena’s act of throwing herself in front of Gabriella. He had been staring at her, taking long strides towards her.
‘No, he wasn’t surprised, he was angry. But why was he angry? I just saved the Princess.’
As Selena stood lost in thought, Lucy, only concerned about her mistress’s wrist, spoke in a distressed voice.
“Lady, go get treatment. Your wrist will swell more.”
“Hmm.”
“Come on, my lady. Your wrist looks even more swollen than before.”
“Alright, alright.”
Since she knew there wouldn’t be a concrete answer if she just sat there thinking, Selena decided to follow Lucy’s advice. Lucy put her arm around Selena’s shoulders and carefully led her away. One of Gabriella’s maids called another doctor for Selena, and she was able to receive treatment without any trouble.
“Thankfully, the bone isn’t broken, but it seems to be fractured. You should be careful for about a month.” The Imperial doctor said as he applied a splint and wrapped a bandage around her wrist.
“Really? Okay, thank you.” Selena’s reaction was calm, as she had already expected this when she felt the sharp pain in her wrist. Lucy, on the other hand, was distraught, stroking Selena’s arm.
“What should we do, my lady? You hurt your right wrist of all things…”
“It’s fine, Lucy. You can be my right arm.”
“Of course. Still, you’ll be uncomfortable.”
“I don’t mind as long as I have you.” Selena winked playfully, one eye closed. Lucy’s face, which had been filled with worry, softened slightly as she chuckled.
Afterwards, the two were escorted home by an Imperial maid. Gabriella, though unharmed, was too shaken to come out and see them off. Selena understood, remembering how Gabriella had been trembling. However, this incident had led her to a clear conclusion.
“Lucy, I’ve decided.”
“Decided what?”
“I won’t be connecting the Princess and Sir Dixon.”
Lucy nodded, not objecting. In her opinion, Dominic wasn’t a completely good man.
“Then we just need to convince the Princess to give up on Sir Dixon?”
“Right. I’ll have to figure out how to persuade her while my arm heals.”
Although her wrist was fractured, Selena felt lighter. Now, all she had to do was make the Princess give up on him, and this assignment would be over. She thought simply, but life rarely goes as planned. She had forgotten about the upcoming grand event in the Carltron Empire.
