The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 20
Chapter 20

Correction. It seems that he did come to see animals. An hour had passed since the party had started, but he didn’t move an inch as he looked down at the nobles gathered below as if they were monkeys.
The only thing that moved were his eyebrows. He even rejected dance requests that came from time to time, causing Selena, who had been waiting, to give up.
‘He won’t come down today.’
Exhausted, Selena went outside to get some fresh air. She didn’t have the energy to dance or socialize at the party. As she aimlessly walked around, lost in thought, she bumped into someone.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” The champagne glass in her hand spilled a little onto the person. Selena looked up apologetically to see who it was.
‘The Tower Lord?’
Hair as black as night, eyes as bright as golden owls, and half of his face covered by a black iron mask. Selena’s eyes were drawn down. A Tower Lord badge was pinned to his black suit.
Only the Tower Lord can own that; the person in front of her must be him. No, but how could she meet him at this time?
Selena, who saw the coldness in his eyes in the mask, hastily opened her mouth. “Um, I’m sorry. Are you okay?” She frantically bowed her head.
Damn it. Of all things, the champagne had to spill on the white shirt.
“I’m really sorry. I’ll pay for the shirt.”
“….”
“Um, are you very angry?” Selena looked at him, who had been silent the whole time, and had an anxious expression on her face.
‘He’s not going to kill me just because some champagne spilled, right?’ Selena couldn’t understand
The Tower Lord, who had been looking at her with an unrecognizable look, suddenly turned his body and left.
“…?”
Watching him leave without saying a word, Selena was at a loss. She thought about chasing after him for a moment, but she didn’t want to make things worse.
Instead, she promised herself to send the money for the shirt to the Magic Tower tomorrow.
‘I really need to rest now….’
Thanks to the exhausting meeting with the Tower Lord that ended like a storm, Selena felt three times more tired.
She finally found the empty balcony and went outside. She closed the curtains tightly to prevent anyone from coming in and leaned against the railing, taking a deep breath.
The cool outside air made her head clear.
‘I think I came here at the wrong time. I should just write a letter to the Crown Prince.’
She had met the Tower Lord at the palace and had a subtle conflict as the fiancee of the Crown Prince.
If she added a conversation with him here, it would be a mess. Selena leaned her head back and looked up at the night sky. However, she heard the sound of someone opening the door behind her.
‘What? Is there someone here?’
Usually, when someone uses the balcony at an event, they close the curtains as a sign.
Selena had also closed the curtains so that the balcony view couldn’t be seen, but someone was trying to come in without paying attention to it.
‘Who is this shameless person… the Crown Prince?’
The face that could be seen through the gap in the curtains was definitely Maximilian.
With silver hair and red eyes, he was not a common sight. Selena was taken aback when she realized the identity of the intruder on the balcony.
The Crown Prince is coming here. To her balcony? If she hadn’t given up on talking to him a little while ago, she would have taken this opportunity, but unfortunately, her feelings have changed since then.
Feeling flustered at the unexpected opportunity, she unknowingly hid behind a column on the balcony.
‘No, why am I hiding now?’ she thought.
But she couldn’t just leave now, so she continued to hide, and finally the door opened and Maximillian appeared.
“Your Highness, are you really going to do this?”
…he was with his fiancée.
‘Wow, it’s a good thing I didn’t get caught.’
Selena, who didn’t want to meet the crown prince and his fiancée alone, wiped her chest.
But then she heard Charlotte’s voice and stopped.
“Your Highness, you have no idea how much I’ve endured just because I love you.” The voice was one full of sadness, which emanated from affection. This was a lover’s quarrel. Of course, from Maximillian’s perspective, it wouldn’t be one, but from Charlotte’s perspective, it was a lover’s quarrel.
Selena, who had never heard a lover’s quarrel up close, froze. She shouldn’t be listening…but the two of them, unaware of her presence, continued their conversation without hesitation.
“I don’t want to know. I’ve never told you to love me.”
“You’re really something, Your Highness.” Maximillian’s sharp response shocked Selena.
Charlotte’s voice also trembled as if she had been hurt.
“If I were to cheat another man, would you not even care, Your Highness?”
“Do I have to care? Oh, is this your way of betraying me? If it’s found out, I’ll have both of you executed.”
Selena realized why Charlotte had asked her about making her jealous. She loved Maximillian, but he didn’t seem to have feelings for her. She wanted to get attention, even if it meant using petty tactics like making him jealous.
“I love you, Your Highness. I wish we could have a marriage based on love, not a strategic one.”
“You’re dreaming. You’re so naive that you didn’t even know I didn’t have feelings for you.”
Maximillian walked towards the railing. He leaned against it with his hands in his pockets and turned around.
“Charlotte Flotte. Don’t do anything stupid in front of me, and don’t lose your insignificant life. Just go out and meet the others.”
“Your Highness, what are you saying…”
“As of this moment, I’m breaking off our engagement. So get lost.”
Maximillian snapped his fingers and nodded towards the door. After a moment of sobbing, the sound of running shoes could be heard. Selena, who hadn’t wanted any of this, didn’t know what to do. She thought it was a lover’s quarrel, but it turned out to be a vivid show of Maximillian breaking off the engagement.
Can someone please help her? Should she wait until the crown prince leaves without moving, or should she try to run away? As soon as she thought that, she was interrupted. “If you were going to watch, you should have stopped before it was too late.” Read ahead here.
