The Reason Why She Can’t Get Married - Chapter 15
Chapter 15
During that time, an unprecedented monsoon hit the entire empire. Typhoons swept through every week, and the sky showed no signs of clearing as gray clouds lingered. Selena, who disliked the damp, rainy weather, would usually stay holed up at home during the monsoon season. But at that time, Selena was the boss of ‘Serennade’, and people madly in love would knock on the doors of ‘Serenade’ regardless of the weather.
Furthermore, it was a time when she was less successful than she is now, so she had to go out if it meant earning money. Thinking about the monthly rent for the building… the operating expenses of the office… and the salaries of the employees… it brought tears to Selena’s eyes.
She had proudly declared that she would be independent without any help from her parents, so she couldn’t even get help from them. She had to make ‘Serenade’ a success no matter what, so she worked hard, not minding the rain and wind.
Even on the day she first met Lemon, she barely managed to drive away a suspicious client and left the office to go home. As she tried to catch a carriage on the slippery road due to the pouring rain… Thump.
“…?” Amidst the sound of rain, an unfamiliar noise reached her ears. Selena slightly lifted her umbrella and looked in the direction where the sound came from. In the dimly lit alley, a dark figure stood tall. Even the falling rain couldn’t erase its presence. Was that a person or a ghost? Selena, whose mind went blank after discovering the unidentified presence, gently tugged on the sleeve of Lucy, who was holding the carriage door.
“Lucy, look over there. There’s someone standing about eight steps away, like a ghost.”
“What? Where?” Lucy, who was the bravest among the servants when it came to fear, immediately turned her head. Because the maid was staring so blatantly, Selena’s heart trembled a little.
Lucy, she shouldn’t make eye contact with ghosts…
“Lady, it’s not a ghost, it’s a person.”
“R-really?”
“Yes, you can see a faint shadow beneath their feet.”
Selena, squinting her eyes and exerting her gaze, confirmed the shadow under the dark figure’s feet and let out a sigh of relief. There really was a shadow. It was a person.
“But isn’t it scarier to see a person standing in a place like this on a day like this than a ghost?”
“Come to think of it, you’re right.”
Selena slowly stepped back.
“Let’s go quickly, Lucy.”
“Yes, lady.” Just as she averted her gaze from the dark figure and was about to get on the carriage, the dark figure suddenly collapsed forward.
The sound of rain splashing sharply filled the air. Selena turned her head in surprise, and without realizing it, she approached the alley while tightly gripping her umbrella. It didn’t feel right to just leave a person collapsed on such a rainy day.
“Lady, please don’t come too close. It could be dangerous.”
“Just a moment, Lucy. I need to check if they’re conscious.”
“Then let me go ahead, and you stay behind me.”
With Lucy at the forefront, the two approached the figure in black. As they got closer, they saw that the figure was a person with long, disheveled robes turned inside out.
“Hey, are you okay?”
“….”
“What’s wrong? Did you get hurt somewhere? Can you speak?” Selena, peeking over Lucy’s shoulder, asked with concern.
The motionless figure, crouched silently on the ground, slowly moved their body. The figure lited their head up, revealing the hood that had covered their face.
‘Wow, an angel?’ Selena thought as she caught sight of the face, which, despite wet hair clinging to it, radiated a shining beauty. She wondered if it was a ghost or a human. Each carefully drawn feature seemed like a heavenly masterpiece. Selena, captivated, personally tilted her umbrella and made eye contact with the moist, amber-colored eyes.
“What happened to you, being like this alone?”
“….”
“If you’re hurt, come with me. I’ll take you to a doctor. That carriage over there is mine.”
Since the person didn’t say a word, Selena, due to the person’s incredibly beautiful face, hastily concluded that they were a woman. Although she had somewhat short hair, not all women had long hair like herself.
“Here, take my hand and stand up.”
The woman moved her light brown eyes and glanced at Selena’s pale, slender hand. After a moment, she cautiously took Selena’s hand and stood up.
“Right, you’ve… stood up.”
As Selena stood up, she suddenly looked startled as the woman’s face quickly rose up towards her.
“Oh, you’re quite tall, aren’t you?” Selena and Lucy were both taller than average for women, but the woman in front of them was at a height that surpassed that of an average man. It turned out that Selena’s initial impression from a distance, mistaking her for a spirit, was not unfounded.
“Let’s go. The nearest hospital should be about a 15-minute from here.”
“….”
“By the way, I’m Selena Irving, the daughter of Marquess Irving. What’s your name?”
Selena smoothly held the woman’s hand and chatted as they walked towards the carriage. The woman, who silently followed behind, raised her eyes and looked at Selena’s round nape before answering.
“Lemon. That’s my name.”
Upon hearing this, Selena abruptly stopped her steps, turning her head. The woman spoke calmly, “And I’m a man.”
Swiftly, Selena let go of the man’s hand as if throwing it away. No, she thought he was a woman, yet she ended up holding a man’s hand. She had make the mistake of assuming.
“Step away from the young lady.” Lucy, who had realized that Lemon was a man, immediately intervened and created distance between the two. He extended his hand to ward off any potential danger but had a meek expression and lowered his gaze. Raindrops trickled down his long, thick eyelashes.
