She grasped Regia’s hilt.
As if waiting, Regia’s sword sprang from its sheath.
The blade quivered with intense excitement.
Radis continued speaking.
“Perhaps some of what you say may be correct. That I am an unqualified knight. I have no intention of loyalty to the empire or the imperial family, nor do I have a life to risk for honor or a lineage.”
Rollard chuckled.
“Can you call that being a knight? Then what are you fighting for?”
Radis lifted Regia’s sword and said,
“For myself.”
Rollard burst into laughter as if incredulous.
“What selfishness is this…!”
Radis raised the sword vertically.
“And for everyone behind me.”
Her words wiped the smile off Rollard’s face, and he shouted sternly,
“Just because you’re a little woman! What are you going to protect?”
Radis said in a calm voice,
“You always point out things like that. Because I’m a woman, because I’m a daughter, because I’m weak, because I’m from a humble background, because I’m a subject. You strip away opportunities and try to tame us.”
She continued slowly,
“You draw those lines, and for so long, you’ve made so much meaningless effort to portray all of us on one side as so insignificant that you can easily replace them.”
“What?”
Rollard exclaimed irritably.
“What are you saying? It’s not for some grand reason that I reject you as a knight!”
Radis chuckled sarcastically.
“I know. It’s probably because you’re projecting.”
“……?”
“Don’t you know? You look weak. Because from your grip, desperately hoping something will fall, something that you can’t consume alone, something that you can’t simply brush off as insignificant, something from that hand that you so greedily hold onto.”
She realized from the beginning that Rollard had ulterior motives.
From the start, Rollard had instigated the argument to provoke her.
It was her mistake not to handle it properly, but perhaps Rollard had somehow maneuvered to create this confrontation between them.
At some point, she could read from the attitude of House Lebeloia’s knights surrounding them.
They were like they were enclosing two people approaching the duel to prevent Radis from escaping.
Radis assumed a guard stance and said,
“But in the face of true despair, filled with such arrogance, you cannot protect anything.”
Rollard’s face twisted.
“Shut up! You’re the one filled with arrogance. Knights exist to protect weaklings like you and this empire! You should be reverent to such knights, but I see no such attitude from you!”
Rollard drew his sword frantically.
Just as Radis was preparing to respond, she suddenly realized something.
She could no longer use imperial swordsmanship.
“Ah, good grief.”
As she hesitated, Rollard’s sword unexpectedly stabbed forward.
“Ohhh!”
A startled exclamation burst from among House Lebeloia’s knights who were watching the situation.
It was a precarious sight for anyone to witness a dainty woman, surrounded by armored knights and being attacked with a sword. She wasn’t even in a defensive stance.
Meanwhile, Radis hesitated to retreat and changed her mind.
‘If I’ve got something to protect, I must fight.’
Responding to her determination, Regia moved swiftly.
Regia’s blade struck Rollard’s sword face as it stabbed forward unexpectedly.
It was not any particular swordsmanship but a simple parry.
However, Rollard almost lost his grip on the sword due to the unexpectedly powerful force from that direction.
“Ugh…!”
As he gritted his teeth and endured the shock while holding the squeaking sword, Radis looked at Regia with awe in her eyes.
Today was the first time she properly wielded Regia in battle.
No matter how good a sword is, it takes time to get used to it.
However, Radis felt an unprecedented sense of unity from Regia.
From the shoulders to the sharp tip of Regia’s sword, everything seemed to be connected.
At that moment, amidst the Lebeloia knights surrounding them, murmurs of disapproval erupted.
“Rollard, what’s going on!”
“He’s treating her as a woman? It’s obvious!”
Radis cast sharp glances at them.
Crossing their arms and laughing leisurely, they chuckled and grinned—mockingly recoiling with great fear when their eyes met Radis’s.
Radis silently turned her gaze to Rollard.
He was holding his hand slightly away from Radis, repeatedly clenching and unclenching it.
His grip seemed to be getting sore.
Fortunately, it didn’t seem like a serious injury.
It was just that the problem was not the sore hand but his wounded pride.
