Regia’s blade tip pierced Daniel’s chest.
She felt one spell being destroyed.
Just as the mana freed from the spell was about to run wild, Radis said,
[ Regia, eat this. ]
A hot energy climbed up the blade.
The mana bound by the spell was reverted back into pure mana within Regia.
It was a power granted only to the stewards and their bloodlines who fulfill their mission in homage to the deity’s name, by the providence.
‘So it was.’
The mana, now stable, climbed up her grasp and coiled into her mana core as if it had always been hers from the beginning.
With careful movements, Radis used Regia to break the second Geas on Daniel.
Daniel’s body then jerked upwards like a fish leaping out of water.
She absorbed all the mana freed from the spell to prevent it from harming him, then retrieved Regia.
Klaudio approached them slowly.
His face was stained with shock and disbelief.
Radis announced,
“I’ve undone the Geas. He’ll regain consciousness soon.”
Klaudio stammered,
“How exactly…? No, who…who are you?”
Radis simply looked at him.
Klaudio wasn’t asking who she was in terms of identity.
He was inquiring about the origin of the tremendous power she wielded, and about the mission she had realized upon awakening to that power.
Radis said in a slightly hushed voice,
“A steward…”
She was a steward.
‘Since when?’
Now, she could guess.
Perhaps she had been a steward chosen by providence since her previous life.
Though not fully awakened.
That’s why she hadn’t died from mana poisoning. Instead, she had gained strength from it, enabling her to harness mana.
Radis remembered what Regia had said when they first met.
‘Neither fully remaining nor awakened. Well, stewards are meant to be like that.’
‘Alexis was the one not fully remaining, and I was the one not awakened.’
Regia quickly responded.
[ Right! Radis, did you meet Alexis? ]
‘Yes.’
[ We have to help her…! ]
‘I know. But how?’
Radis’s gaze deepened.
Then Klaudio spoke.
“A steward? Did you say steward just now?”
But he couldn’t continue.
“Radis, what happened?”
Daniel, regaining consciousness, reached out to Radis.
“I thought I would never see you again…”
Radis knelt down and held his hand with both of hers.
She told him everything was over.
“Master, you are now free.”
Like sunlight shimmering on the lake, casting a myriad of colors upon the waves, various emotions flitted across Daniel’s face.
He seemed sorrowful yet somehow relieved, tormented yet simultaneously composed.
With a complex expression and a faint smile, he said,
“You did that for me.”
Radis realized that Daniel knew everything.
He knew that the Emperor had deceived him, and that there was no way to undo the two Geases cast upon him.
Daniel continued in a hushed voice,
“Radis. When the Emperor was hailed as a hero, I was a squire serving by his side. Back then, the Emperor was like a blazing fire. I was drawn to him like a moth to the flame.”
He smiled as if about to break any moment.
“Radis, he never lost in battle. But he couldn’t conquer himself. I didn’t want to see the color of that flame fade. So…”
His eyes began to redden.
“…Now, it’s all just a meaningless sentiment.”
Radis could understand his pain.
She knew the emptiness of having the pillar sustaining one’s life suddenly vanish.
Even if that pillar was rotting and spreading mold throughout his life, it must have been something precious at one time.
Yet, she knew despite that, even when the meaning of life seems to disappear, one must continue living.
Even if a pillar of life collapses, making everything seem over, one day another support can be found.
Radis, holding Daniel’s hand tightly, said,
“Master… You are the best teacher to me. And you will continue to be.”
At her awkward attempt at consolation, Daniel smiled faintly.
The Geas that tormented him was gone.
But Radis could feel that his heart still harbored thorns.
Yet, she knew a time would come when he could pull out those thorns and lay them down.
There would be moments of unbearable pain, but surely, there would be many more days that are quite alright.
She had been through it herself.
Then Klaudio said to Daniel in a heavy voice,
“It would be best to leave before the Emperor finds out that your Geas has been broken.”
Daniel sent Klaudio a faint smile.
“Kicking me out as soon as the Geas is broken?”
“Get lost already. The thought of dealing with the mess you’ll be leaving is already giving me a headache.”
Daniel chuckled lightly as he got up from the bed.
As Radis approached to support him, he asked,
“Do you want to help that woman?”
Radis didn’t immediately understand what he was talking about.
Daniel added,
“The pitiful Alexis Tilrod, who is still suffering.”
With wide eyes and unable to say anything, Radis listened as Daniel teased with a playful smile,
“Didn’t I tell you? If you need me, I will always be there to help you.”
t/n: another correction— the mentions of a prophesied ‘throne’ throughout the story should have been translated as ‘steward’ instead (these words are a homonym korean word so i confused the two). i’ll try to go back to the past chapters to fix this up when i can
