Rubbing his forehead against the cold stone, Yves lay face down, continuing to read the magazine.
7. They often think of others more than themselves.
8. They possess a strong sense of responsibility.
Feeling utterly worthless, Yves straightened up.
“Yeah. It’s just me who’s the bad guy.”
It felt like he had been assaulted by the god of truth. All the strength seemed to drain from his body.
Yves collapsed onto the ornate chair like a rag doll. He muttered despondently,
“Responsibility…”
That word, which should have held a beautiful meaning, strangely approached him with a foreboding and uncomfortable sensation.
With his forehead deeply furrowed, Yves Russell slowly rose from his slumped position and stood up.
* * *
The building of the Chivalric Order of the White Dragon, which guarded the empire, was located within the imperial city—yet resembled a fortress with its thick walls, appearing like another castle within the capital.
Once you cross the drawbridge over the moat and pass through the double gates, a spacious training ground appeared.
On the glossy stone floor of the training ground, the knights of the White Dragon Order were practicing.
Their shouts and the clashing of weapons sounded more intriguing to Radis than any music.
Daniel stroked her head as he asked,
“Are you enjoying this?”
Radis, trying not to show her excitement, replied,
“It’s impressive. Truly befitting the empire’s strongest knights.”
They walked along the arcade surrounding the training ground.
The walls of the arcade featured deep alcoves, seemingly resting spots for the knights.
The knights resting there sprang to their feet as they saw Daniel approaching.
They clenched their fists to their chests, a salute to their heart, and exclaimed,
“Glory to the highest!”
Daniel responded with the same gesture.
“Peace to the land.”
A few younger knights sent curious glances towards Radis.
“Sir Sheldon, who is this person?”
At their question, Daniel replied with a proud smile,
“My apprentice.”
Radis momentarily worried that Daniel might add some unnecessary affectionate remarks to the title of his apprentice, but fortunately, he did not.
Hearing that she was Daniel’s apprentice, the knights of the White Dragon Order gave her friendly smiles and politely stepped back.
‘The atmosphere is quite different from the Black Lion Order…’
The knights of the Black Lion Order had been bothersome, clinging to her for guidance even though she wasn’t officially a member of their order.
Instead of being considerate when she felt embarrassed, they seemed to find joy in troubling her, with the teasing growing day by day.
Somehow, it seemed like the knights took after the marquis himself.
Daniel pointed towards the building.
“There’s an archive in the basement. I’d like to show it to you. There’s no other place in the empire that has such a collection of texts on mana training.”
At the mention of mana training, stars seemed to spill from Radis’s eyes.
Seeing her reaction, Daniel burst into hearty laughter.
Walking across the stoned training ground, Daniel said affectionately,
“Walking this path with you feels like a dream.”
Moved by Daniel’s words, Radis felt a surge of emotion.
She felt the same way, as if this moment was like a dream.
She tightly embraced Daniel’s arm and said,
“Being here with you, Master… It really makes me happy, too. I’m so content.”
Daniel smiled softly at her.
“I’m glad to see you’re enjoying yourself.”
Looking up at Daniel, Radis suddenly noticed how his nape, hidden beneath his golden hair, was so gaunt it almost revealed his bones.
‘Huh?’
She gently touched the arm she was holding. It felt as thin as a branch.
Daniel was always slender, but now he seemed so frail, as if he might crumble with a single touch.
Radis stopped in her tracks.
“Master…”
At her call, Daniel turned around with a bright smile, but it slowly faded and disappeared as if it had been erased.
Radis turned around too.
Behind her, from the building of the knights’ order, a group of people emerged.
The first thing she saw was the knights of the White Dragon Order in their dazzlingly white uniforms.
Behind them were attendants, and among them stood a middle-aged man dressed in an attire as flamboyant as a peacock.
Daniel quickly stepped forward, whispering,
“Radis, stay still.”
He shielded Radis with his body and bowed his head.
Radis could sense the tension in his posture.
‘What’s going on?’
She peeked around Daniel’s shoulder to get a glimpse of the situation.
The middle-aged man was looking in their direction. As he spoke, one of the White Dragon knights shook his head.
Just as the knight was about to speak, the middle-aged man shouted.
“Daniel!”
Daniel swallowed a sigh.
That man was none other than the emperor of the empire, the very person who had imposed a double Geas on him.
Claude Arpend.
