Saintess - Chapter 35
Chapter 35
Translator: Yonnee
—
The period for the sacrament of confession was only one day away.
As she was lying in bed, Agnes found it difficult to sleep easily. She tossed and turned.
Her thoughts were busily going over her plans for escape.
First of all, she would tell the head maid to take her to where the count was.
Once she’d meet the count, she would kneel down and weep.
She would confess the truth and tell him that she made a mistake in denying her identity as the obscene saintess. And after that, she would confess all her sins.
“Will His Lordship even believe it?”
Even when a sword had been pointed at her neck before, she denied it through and through. Would he believe that such a woman was now meekly acquiescing to admitting the ‘truth’?
She couldn’t even guess how the count might react to what she’d say.
“Haa…”
A deep sigh escaped Agnes’s lips.
It was only natural that she couldn’t sleep. After all, she must do something very important tomorrow.
Still, now that she thought about it, she hadn’t seen nor hide nor hair of the head maid today. The head maid had been serving Agnes the same jasmine tea every night, but she had yet to arrive at her room.
Bang, bang!
Then, someone pounded at the door.
Startled, Agnes stared blankly in that direction.
There’s no way that the head maid would come at such a late hour. Agnes was as wary as a kitten now.
“Y-Your Lordship?”
The count quickly headed straight for Agnes with wide, urgent strides.
Was he here to try and violate her again?
It had been months since he tried it the first time, and he didn’t show any signs of trying it again since. But now, while her defenses were completely down, he was here.
Forcing her voice, which refused to come out, she asked Raon.
“W-What brings you here so suddenly…”
“Shh.”
Carefully examining their surroundings, Raon covered Agnes’s mouth. His face showed no emotion.
Then, he whispered slowly.
“From now on, answer me only with a nod or a shake of your head. Do not say anything aloud. Do you understand?”
As Agnes answered with a slow nod, Raon dressed Agnes with a cloak that had been prepared in advance.
With his fingers going over each button, Agnes was surprised by how delicate and gentle his touch was. Agnes, once again, felt a sense of security with him.
“Come, follow me.”
She was overcome with the urge to ask where they were going, but she had to hold it in. The count told her just now to stay quiet.
Like that, the two of them escaped the manor.
As everyone in the manor was deeply asleep, everything was so quiet that it didn’t feel real.
For a moment, the thought crossed Agnes’s mind. Was this a dream?
As they passed through the main gates, the butler, Clovis, was there.
Next to him was a huge, four-wheeled carriage.
Watching Raon and Agnes passing through the gates, Clovis cast a disapproving glance.
“Do you really have to do this, Milord?”
With his tone filled with a sense of urgency, Clovis asked. However, Raon only answered with an order to open the carriage door, his tone low.
“Get in.”
As the carriage door opened, Raon urged Agnes to enter the vehicle first.
Then he, too, immediately got in.
“W-Where are we going?”
Wracked with nervousness, Agnes inadvertently broke her promise to stay quiet. As soon as she spoke, the carriage door banged shut firmly.
Soon enough, the carriage started moving.
“I’m sending you home.”
“……!”
Agnes’s eyes went wide. Not for a second in her life did she think this would happen.
She couldn’t believe her ears. Raon was sending her back home?
Shocked, Agnes asked back.
“H-Home?”
“I left some gold coins in the inner pocket of that robe.”
As he said this, she became aware of what seemed to be a palm-sized pouch sitting in the inner pocket of the robe she’s wearing.
Carefully opening the pouch, she found that these weren’t just ‘some’ gold coins. The pouch was full of it.
She couldn’t be certain of it, but with this much, she might just be able to buy a house in the capital, with some change left, too.
“Take your family and go far away.”
Although it’s true that Agnes had been planning to escape in the first place, she couldn’t help but be flustered by Raon’s sudden change in attitude.
For a long time, she sat there in silence, staring at Raon. Whether she wanted to or not, doubts arose in her mind.
“Why are you letting me go? Why are you giving me all this money?”
“To relieve my guilt.”
Raon answered, but Agnes couldn’t understand the meaning behind it.
What exactly did this man do that he’s trying to relieve his ‘guilt’ now?
Agnes clenched her hands into fists, to the point that her knuckles could be seen clearly.
The carriage ran for a very long time.
Neither one of them tried to strike a conversation.
In that stifling silence, what could only be heard were the horses’ hooves, running vigorously across the dirt road, and the wheels of the carriage, clattering with each turn.
