Obviously, It's My Child - Chapter 122
‘Well, our family’s lineage won’t end with just an ordinary Barony.’
Looking back into their ancestors, it’s a lineage that diverged from a County, which served as a Chancellor of Arren based on its capabilities alone.
Charles whispered to him while standing beside.
“Father, if you don’t watch your behavior, Claire might say something later.”
“Ho, what? Today is the wedding of Delford and Klausener, aren’t we the representatives of the Delford family?”
The only regret was that he couldn’t escort Claire into the hall.
Since her parents were absent, it was his role as the head of the family, but ever since Iris made that remark when she first visited, he couldn’t easily make such complaints.
As he shrugged and entered, Grey was watching from a distance. Next to him, Deputy Minister Schultz said,
“He deserves to be more arrogant. A place like Barony Delford to become a relative of Duchy Klausener. And it’s not like a collateral marrying.”
“Sir James is not a bad person, but he’s a bit reckless, so I’m a little worried.”
“He’s not the head of the house, so it should be okay, right?”
“That’s a valid point.”
Deputy Minister Schultz picked up two champagne glasses from a passing tray and handed one to Grey.
“It’s time for you to focus on your concerns.”
“My concerns… What do you mean?”
“Well. Now that Barony Delford and Duchy Klausener are practically merged, most of the family’s legal advisory roles will probably shift over there. Even if it’s rewarding as a top lawyer for the Weaving Guild, you’re not someone who will settle for just that.”
“Mr. Schultz.”
“How about reconsidering repaying the favor to the Delford family? Of course, you could join the prestigious legal team of Klausener, and you’re more than capable of that, but it’s not something only you can do.”
Schultz passionately argued.
“Rather than that, climbing to a higher position is the way to repay expectations. Isn’t that why the current Baron released you?”
“Well, I still think I lack experience to enter politics for the time being.”
Grey said calmly.
“I want to keep guarding the office for a while. Didn’t you also hope for that when you entrusted it to me, Mr. Schultz?”
“That was when Barony Delford was just a Barony. I thought she would push you hard if you remained as you are.”
“She’s still treating me well.”
“However, Klausener’s legal advisors might reject you. Instead of that, why not get sponsorship from me and Ernst together?”
Schultz let out a regretful sigh.
“That would be better for the Baron as well. It could even help you establish a separate good relationship with Duchy Ernst. As long as your intentions are clear, and you don’t break the trust, it’s not betrayal.”
“Yes, I understand. I just think the office is more important for now. Protecting the base is important.”
“Well, how about just going to greet Duke Ernst for now? He happened to attend the wedding today.”
“All right.”
As he answered, Grey couldn’t help but smile ambiguously.
He knew that Schultz’s words came from a genuine concern for him. Schultz wanted to pull him in, a commoner who had risen solely based on his abilities without a prestigious family or influence.
However, if it was Duchy Ernst, he felt a bit hesitant. Until a few months ago, he would have simply appreciated Schultz’s intentions, but now it was awkward.
This was because Duchy Ernst was related to the Empress. At this point, where it was almost certain that Claire would become hostile to the Empress, he had no intention of receiving sponsorship from Ernst.
But a simple greeting should not cause any harm.
With champagne glasses in hand, the two exchanged light pleasantries with other guests in the garden.
Chairman Neumann also welcomed the two warmly. He was familiar with Grey as they had encountered each other several times from the engagement party until now.
“Sir Schultz, are you trying to steal Klausener’s promising future?”
“Steal the future? What are you talking about? Honestly, because of internal competition in Klausener….”
While the two were talking, high-profile guests began to arrive one after another.
“Archduke Victoria has arrived. I’m going to greet her, want to come along?”
“I’d be happy to. You, come along too.”
Grey hesitated for a moment. He didn’t want to witness Claire’s entrance.
However, Schultz had a point. Establishing his position was also important. It would be a position Claire could rely on when she needed it in the future.
He ran his tongue over the inside of his mouth that suddenly became bitter.
He had always acknowledged his shortcomings, but this was the first time he had felt such a strong desire for power.
If it were him, what could he have done when Claire was in danger?
Instead of tearing down the walls of the opera house and threatening the special investigation team, he would at best cite legal provision and make a war of nerves.
It wasn’t too late even now. He might not be able to match Erich, but at least he wanted to be a man who could be more than just a loyal follower and a vassal, someone who could be relied on.
It was before he made his decision.
“Wow…!”
Cheers could be heard in the distance.
From the lower employees of Klausener who did not receive invitations, to the employees of the Weaving Guild, and even to the citizens who had just come to watch the wedding, everyone erupted in joyful cheers.
Chairman Neumann smiled.
“I feel like I’m going to cheer.”
“Duke Klausener’s dignity is truly remarkable.”
Schultz said so. But in his mind Grey thought that there was more to it than that.
