Authority was present in this room, but hardly anyone was willing to step up and take the lead. Chairperson Neumann was no different.
In times like these, the Emperor himself must step forward.
‘But the Emperor is unlikely to come out.’
Ever since the Crown Prince’s death five years ago, the Emperor had been living in seclusion. He was suffering from a severe heart condition, it seems he was living with his pain as if he were already dead.
Chairperson Neumann let out another sigh. Once they fought enough, they would regain their calmness again.
Tomorrow, there will be an arrangement from the Klausener Duchy as well.
At that moment, the conference room door opened. Four attendants dressed in imperial uniforms entered, holding flags.
The last to enter was the Empress lady-in-waiting, Augusta.
Everyone fell silent.
“Everyone is struggling about state affairs day and night.”
Augusta’s voice was gentle but filled the entire conference room.
As the representative of the group, Chairperson Neumann went forward to exchange greetings with her. Augusta spoke calmly.
“This concerns the matter with the Klausener Duchy, which would be difficult to handle within the House of Representatives. Thus, the Imperial family has instructed me to deliver this notice.”
There’s no way these words came from the sick Emperor. This might be the Empress’s will, but since the one leading the imperial family was the Empress, this was no different from an imperial order.
“We understand Duke Klausener’s distress due to the situation with his fiancée. Moreover, we cannot ignore the heinous crime of kidnapping a noble lady. Therefore, not only the police department but also the House of Representatives shall establish a special investigative team to look into the criminal organization behind this incident.”
The atmosphere in the House of Representatives stirred.
At first glance, it seemed to have only one meaning, but Augusta’s words contained two implications.
Firstly, it meant that everything for today should be kept confidential. Secondly, the Klausener Duchy should not be directly involved in this matter any further .
The chief of police wouldn’t be able to easily defy the Duke’s words, but with the Emperor’s decision to form a ‘special investigative team’ within the House of Representatives, the Duke could no longer interfere.
It was an excellent way to avoid direct confrontation with the Klausener Duchy while cautioning against power abuse.
“We shall respect the Emperor’s will.”
CHairperson Neumann replied respectfully. Instead of stating it as it is the Imperial Family’s will, he emphasized it as the Emperor’s will, pointing out that the Empress was also abusing her power.
However, Augusta remained silent for a moment before retreating without further words.
* * *
Augusta did not return to the Empress’s palace. Instead, she switched to a modest black carriage that resembled a rental carriage, dismissing the attendants and the imperial family’s carriage.
The black carriage headed towards a detached palace.
The detached palace, also known as the Lotus Palace, was more like a small villa than a palace. It had a large pond in the garden, which was filled with lotus flowers in the summer.
Augusta carried only a small lamp with her as she entered. From the outside, it was cloaked in darkness, as if there were no people inside. But in reality, thick curtains over all the windows were drawn.
In the parlor, Katya was sitting.
Augusta furrowed her brows. This woman had been granted enough favor, yet she, who couldn’t veil her lowly birth, had the audacity to come here like this.
“I had already warned you about coming here uninvited.”
“It concerns an urgent matter, so please be generous.”
Katya replied politely, but her attitude was nothing buy.
Augusta stared at her with a haughty expression.
“We will form a special investigation team to prevent Klausener’s interference. Now that you’ve understood, you may leave.”
“That’s not as good as a promise.”
“You’re making outrageous demands. Because you failed to manage your subordinates and ended up in a life-or-death situation, the Empress took pity and spared you. You should be thankful and humbled, and yet you are making demands instead.”
“Why do you think it’s my fault that I couldn’t control my subordinates?”
Katya growled like a ferocious dog.
“If the Empress hadn’t used Stephan to threaten me, would Thomas have thought that Baron Delford’s visit was such a big deal and acted so recklessly?”
“Unbelievable. Are you suggesting that the Empress deliberately put in the effort to lure and trap someone like you?”
Augusta said coldly.
“You hatched a foolish plan, drawing the Duke’s attention, so I advised you to lay low for a while. Despite that, you couldn’t stay quiet and got involved in something this serious. Just sparing your life should be seen as a blessing.”
Katya bit her lower lip and glared at Augusta.
Indeed, it was her who had hatched the plan during the engagement party. But it was also a clear fact that the Empress wanted Baron Delford gone.
Or why else would a ’sedative’ suddenly come into her possession?
Unlike lotus leaf cigarettes, ‘sedatives’ wasn’t something easily obtainable. There was no evidence, but Katya was willing to bet her life that the Empress was using the same thing to eliminate her rivals.
Katya believed that the Empress had distributed ‘sedatives’ to several people, and it was true.
“Just because you call me a dog doesn’t mean you can use and dispose of me easily, Augusta.”
“What?”
“Once a dog bites, it doesn’t let go. I’ll never die alone.”
Katya declared with a resolute attitude, then stood up, bowed slightly in greeting, and left.
Augusta gently drew back the curtains and watched Katya disappear into the darkness.
One of the handmaids who had been inside quietly came out and said.
“Truly impertinent.”
“Exceedingly audacious.”
