My Past Life is Riddled With Many Sins - Chapter 73
If he had been after her life, she might have been dead by now. That was the meaning of grabbing her from behind.
Wrapped in goosebumps, humiliation, and awkwardness, Regina faced him. She recognized who it was the moment she heard his voice.
“What brings the Dean here…?”
“I was curious when I saw young Regina sneaking out of the banquet like a cat.”
Bliss answered with a grin. His demeanor is annoyingly smug. Regina felt like slapping him, though realistically, she had neither the power nor the status to reprimand him.
“I, I wasn’t feeling well, so I stepped out for some air.”
“With such purposeful strides? As if you knew exactly where you were going.”
“Me? That can’t be. It’s my first time at the palace today.”
“That’s so. Yet you move around as if guided, without any help. I was quite fascinated.”
Bliss continued, staring intently at her.
“Even nobles who visit every year need guides not to get lost here. It’s as if you’ve lived here.”
Regina felt a cold sweat break out beneath her skin as his green eyes looked at her with certainty.
He had seen her capabilities at the swordsmanship tournament. More than anything, that solidified his belief.
‘Of course, he couldn’t fail to recognize me.’
She couldn’t deceive him. Deceiving Skyler with a sword would be an insult to him.
Regina resigned herself. Following Prince Iskanda. Skyler had also discovered she was the reincarnation of Yekarna. With the cat out of the bag, there was no point in being cautious.
“I have something urgent to attend to, how can I persuade you to let me go?”
Bliss’s eyes widened at Regina’s sudden shift in tone, then his face lit up with a bright smile.
“It’s good to see we understand each other.”
When she met his gleaming, almost savage smile, a shiver ran down her spine. Green eyes are supposed to be comforting, yet his were like nothing she’d ever encountered…. It was menacing, not like some predatory plant she knew of.
“You seem busy, so let’s save the detailed conversation for another time. I’ll withdraw the escort here, my Regina.”
He grabbed her hand, kissed the back of it without her consent, and then politely bowed before withdrawing.
Regina shivered, fearing what would happen. For someone who committed many sins, ‘we’ll talk later’ could be the most terrifying words.
“Escort? Who could be targeting me….”
She muttered to herself thinking about his words. She then paused as a sudden thought struck her.
‘Could it be because of the attack during the swordsmanship competition?’
Was that why he followed her out of the banquet hall alone? To protect her from another possible attack?
Her heart fluttered at the thought, which felt absurd. She should be despised for her past deeds as Yekarna. It made more sense to assume he had come to finish her off, but postponed his plans.
Disgusted once again by the karma she had accrued in her previous life, Regina sighed. But she quickly collected herself. Now was not the time to dwell on the past.
Once she was sure no one was around, she stood in front of a portrait of the first Emperor. Taking a deep breath, she poked both eyes of the portrait’s imposing figure. The painting vanished, revealing a door in its place.
“Really, such bad taste.”
Creating a library that required poking the eyes of one’s portrait to enter was a peculiar taste indeed.
After shaking her head in disbelief, Regina opened the door and stepped inside. The library was impeccably clean because it was maintained magically. If not, the Emperor himself would have had to clean it periodically.
The interior had barely changed over the past two centuries, allowing her to quickly locate the documents she needed. As she rapidly absorbed the information, her gaze suddenly froze.
The most recent disturbance in the Middle Realm because of activity in the Demon Realm was estimated to be in the year 1073 of the Imperial calendar. In response, Yekarna Barrett Villarperosa Lee Enfield had secretly organized a punitive force….
“What?”
She double-checked, thinking it was a mistake, but the text on the paper remained unchanged. Regina was considerably perplexed.
“Why is my name here?”
The notion of her past self exterminating demons and monsters was unheard of. In her reign, were there even such creatures in the Middle Realm? She was utterly clueless.
‘What misunderstanding might have happened here?’
Or was it inflating her achievements? Perhaps the descendants inflated her accomplishments to bolster the imperial family’s prestige?
Her mind was in turmoil, but she continued reading the next section. There was no time to dwell on doubts now.
…In 1081 of the Imperial Calendar, a successful campaign eradicated the demons and monsters that violated the non-aggression pact with the Middle Realm.
Subsequently, Yekarna Barrett Villarperosa Lee Enfield ordered all related documents destroyed, intending to forever conceal this event. However, after the Great Empress’s death, evidence stored by Mary Bathusha, confirmed these achievements.
“This level of fabrication is practically an art form.”
Using Mary’s name to craft a plausible tale. Even if the dead could speak, this was nothing but lies concealed as truth… She apologized to Mary in her heart. Please forgive her descendants’ greed-driven actions.
‘Demons, really? I’ve never even seen anything like that in my life…’
Suddenly, a vivid image flashed in her mind. A golden mana blade exploding outward, slicing through monsters.
Regina froze. The color of a mana blade varied from person to person, and gold was so rare it might as well have been synonymous with Yekarna.
Was this just her imagination?
