My Past Life is Riddled With Many Sins - Chapter 121
Margarita summoned her mana, enveloping her body in a faint white glow. Looking down at her muscles with a proud expression, she asked.
“See? Doesn’t it look more beautiful like this?”
Regina found herself at a loss for words. Regardless, knowing that Margarita was a mana user put her at ease.
“How long can you maintain that state?”
“Um… last time, I stood in front of the mirror for about two hours like this, so maybe around that?”
Two hours wasn’t exactly a long time. Regina realized she needed to act quickly to solve their problem and escape, so she infused her bracelet with mana and uttered the activation phrase. Margarita’s eyes widened in surprise as she witnessed the bracelet transform into a sword, glowing with light.
“From now on, please don’t speak of what you see and hear once we’re outside the rift.”
“Uh? Oh.”
Margarita agreed, a bit dazed. Wrapped in golden mana, Regina looked almost divine, making it hard for Margarita to object. She didn’t know mana could shine so beautifully.
Regina asked Margarita, who was purely admiring the sight.
“I’m going to have to kill the devilkins and destroy the demon stone to get out of here, so Senior please stay within my line of sight, okay?”
Nodding as if she was pushed into it, Margarita suddenly realized something was off. Was it right to leave everything to her junior?
Margarita knew Regina was the runner-up in the first-year category of the swordsmanship tournament. Meanwhile, her own combat skills barely existed despite her strength with heavy objects. But still, leaving the fighting to her junior and hiding didn’t sit well with her.
As she followed Regina’s lead, her thoughts shifted toward the idea of needing to help.
“Stay here.”
Before Margarita could respond, Regina dashed ahead. Margarita lost sight of Regina’s movements in an instant. She moved with a speed impossible to track. Soon after, a loud thud echoed as something fell to the ground. Startled, she turned to see black creatures writhing on the floor, split in two. Before long, they dissipated into smoke.
Seeing a monster in person, which she had only read about in books, left Margarita in shock. But that was just the beginning.
Regina moved forward confidently, seemingly sensing something, swiftly dispatching the approaching monsters. Margarita couldn’t even see how Regina struck them down. One moment they were there, and the next, they were down.
As they continued advancing, they spotted a man surrounded by dozens of monsters. He resembled a human, but there was no way a human could be protected by monsters inside the rift.
Margarita tensed, managing to speak.
“Junior, that’s a devilkin….”
“I’ll finish this quickly.”
Without a hint of hesitation, Regina charged forward. The golden mana extending from her sword traced a mesmerizing arc through the air.
However, the radiant beams of light that remained in their wake were always accompanied by death, much like the scythe of a reaper. Margarita couldn’t take her eyes away from the beautiful yet chilling sight. There was no other word to describe this feeling but ‘captivated.’
In an instant, the sword that had dispatched dozens of monsters pierced the heart of a devilkin. Initially, the creature bled like a human, but soon it began to ooze a black liquid before evaporating into smoke.
Hidden behind the devilkin’s body was a suspicious stone that emanated a peculiar glow. No doubt about it, it was a demon stone.
Regina seemed to have the same thought, raising her sword high. At that moment, a realization struck Margarita. The demon stone, which was the source of power maintaining the rift, could only be destroyed with output comparable to a swordmaster’s mana blade.
“Hey…!”
The moment Margarita opened her mouth, the sword engulfed in explosive golden mana struck the magic stone, shattering it into pieces.
Watching the fragments scatter around her, Margarita thought. So that’s what a mana blade looks like.
Simultaneously, she realized she was witnessing a moment that would be etched in history. Regina Heather was now a swordmaster, breaking the barrier that no one had surpassed for over two hundred years since the death of the great Empress Yekarna.
The Regina Heather before her was undoubtedly that of the youngest swordmaster in the continent’s history.
As she trembled at this revelation, Regina quickly approached and swept her up in her arms.
“Hold on tight.”
Regina lifted Margarita and sprinted forward. The destruction of the demon stone caused the space around them to collapse. Remembering that the demon stone’s purpose was to maintain the passage connecting the middle realm and the demon realm, it was a natural result.
They needed to escape quickly. The thought of what would happen if they failed to get out in time was too terrifying to contemplate.
“Uwaah!”
Margarita, lost in thought, screamed when she glanced behind them. It was understandable. The space behind them had already begun to disintegrate.
Margarita clung tightly to Regina and urged her.
“Faster! Faster!”
“Don’t thrash around. It will only slow us down.”
Hearing Regina’s calm voice snapped Margarita out of her panic. Regina retraced her steps and found the hole through which they had initially entered. With all her strength, she leaped and passed through, emerging beneath the familiar night sky, the taste of air filling her lungs.
Landing softly on the ground from the height of the rift, Regina set Margarita down and adjusted her clothing. The professors were present.
“Miss Heather, what is going on here…?”
“It’s a rift.”
A ripple of surprise spread among the professors. Regina quickly took the lead.
“I’ll provide more details tomorrow. I need to go receive a purification rite.”
“Oh? I’ll contact the temple right away and request a priest.”
“That’s alright. I’ll go see someone I know to get it done, so if you could allow me to step out…”
“Understood. Go on and take care of it.”
