Chapter 16.2
As she tried to quicken her steps and cross the threshold, she was stopped by the Crown Prince. Devoncia, using his forearm to close the door and block the way, gazed down at her with a slightly apologetic expression.
“I understand you’re worried, but it’s a family matter. Princess, please don’t chase after him.”
“But Your Highness, I…”
“I’m sorry for surprising you, though this happens often. I’ll handle it and come back, so could you wait for a moment?”
“Ah…”
Despite the fact that it was about the family affairs of the imperial family, Ariel felt a sense of frustration, as if there was no room for her to protest.
As Devoncia had said, the fundamental reason behind Skylar’s anger wasn’t likely the sense of betrayal he felt from her, whom he had only met a few days ago. It was more likely due to Devoncia’s actions, someone he had known and spent time with for a long time. So, if Devoncia himself were to step forward and resolve things with his brother, there was little reason for Ariel to intervene. In addition, considering their previous conversation, wouldn’t that make the situation even more complicated?
Still, she couldn’t help but feel concerned and uneasy about this.
“Yes, Your Highness.”
Ariel couldn’t help but nod.
Once he confirmed that she had agreed, Devoncia stepped aside and opened the door he had been blocking.
“There’s a waiting room at the end of this corridor. Could you wait there? There are comfortable chairs, so waiting should be fine.”
“Yes. I’ll do that. Don’t worry about me.”
“I’ll be back shortly.”
With a faint smile, he eventually followed after Skylar, who had already disappeared down the corridor. His pace was full of leisure, as if he knew exactly where to find his brother.
Standing in the doorway, Ariel watched Devoncia move away. Her eyes, following the Crown Prince’s retreating figure, appeared persistent as though they were indifferent.
As the Crown Prince descended the stairs and disappeared from view, she slowly started moving. She didn’t head towards the room he had indicated, but instead, she moved in the opposite direction. Ariel stepped softly on the carpeted corridor, making her way towards the staircase. It was as if she was trailing, following in pursuit of the Crown Prince. Having seen the scene earlier, she had no intention of leaving everything to him and stepping down.
‘He’s probably going to talk nonsense to Skylar again.’
While she didn’t have plans to intrude between the two, Ariel intended to explain herself to Skylar later. She was determined not to let the Crown Prince dictate the situation as he pleased.

She quietly followed behind, but maybe it was because she was too cautious, but she lost sight of the Crown Prince. Her steps noticeably slowed down as she lost her way, causing her to wander the corridor. Although she desperately searched for the two who had gone ahead, they were nowhere to be seen. Furthermore, it was a place so deserted that finding even the slightest trace of human presence was difficult.
‘I’ve never actually tried trailing someone, let alone following a member of the royal family in an unfamiliar place…’
Even as she entertained realistic thoughts, Ariel didn’t stop pacing. If she were to halt her steps, she might miss even the chance of an accidental encounter…
‘No, wait a minute… Is there really a need to go through the trouble of trailing?’
She suddenly remembered an important fact that she had forgotten and reached into her coat’s pocket.
‘Why didn’t I use this from the beginning?’
As she thought so, Ariel turned on the phone screen and activated a familiar function.
『 A target has been detected far away. 』
『 Devoncia von Elios Lévretin
▷ Favorability towards you: [ Unable to verify ] (Due to a temporary error, the verification of the affection is delayed.)
▷ Current Location: Imperial Library’s Backyard. 』
『 A target has been detected far away. 』
『 Skylar von Aither Lévretin
▷ Favorability towards you: ♥ (He’s interested in you, and if you talk to him, there’s a high probability of him accepting.)
▷ Current Location: Imperial Library’s Backyard. 』
Above the bird’s-eye view of the wide backyard, two portraits stood side by side near the river. Ariel headed straight to the west building where the portraits of her targets were.
The sky was clear, and there was no wind. The leaves of the garden trees were neatly arranged and glistened in the sunlight.
‘With such nice weather like this, I wonder what kind of argument they’re having again.’
She narrowed the distance to the portraits until they were visible to the naked eye. Ariel circled around the tranquil grassy area and approached along a narrow path. As she entered the path by the riverbank lined with cedar trees, the sound of water became audible.
Beneath the deep shade, two nobles dressed in dark attire came into view.
“…I told you.”
While Skylar’s tone remained furious, heavy and irritable, Devoncia responded quietly.
The conversation wasn’t clearly audible.
Hiding among the cedars, she slowly advanced little by little. Fortunately, the trees were dense enough to minimize the worry of being caught.
The two voices, murmuring softly, became clearer.
“Why? Are you trying to make Ariel Huckley your lover? Is that why you even went as far as doing a background check on her?”
