Chapter 16.1
The tightly locked door that was seamlessly shut has now been opened. The sealed space has been breached, allowing the external light to seep in, creating a long beam of light.
The gradually widening beam of light eventually covered the outlines of Ariel and Devoncia, who stood behind her. And there, at the end of the extending light, a familiar figure was holding onto the doorknob—a face resembling the Crown Prince but with eyes that gleamed more fiercely and a colder demeanor.
Skylar.
His eyes flickered to her before turning to her restrained wrist to the owner of the hand that held her as the gaze trembled. Skylar’s expression seemed as though he had been betrayed.
Ariel couldn’t utter a word as she could only hold onto her doubts.
‘…Why did Skylar open this locked door at this moment?’
The reason undoubtedly lay with the person standing behind her right now. From the very beginning, starting with the invitation, this scenario had been planned and executed.
The guilt of being trapped in a snare weighed Ariel down. She had entered the academy through a connection with Crown Prince Skyra, but on their second encounter, she was seen with the Crown Prince. Whether intentional or not, from Skylar’s perspective, it could be perceived as a betrayal. Because of that, she had to repudiate Devoncia in front of him.
As she exerted strength and tried to twist away, the grip that had been holding her wrist suddenly vanished.
As the power had nowhere to go, her hand floated in the air. The moment Ariel resolved to push away the Crown Prince behind her, he released her first. It was an action that spurred Skylar’s misunderstanding.
When she suddenly turned her head to look behind, Devoncia, who had already moved away, gave her a faint smirk.
“I’m sorry, but can you hold back for now? I’ll do it again later.”
The Crown Prince’s words sent a shiver down her spine. Ariel’s astonishment was replaced by an astonished expression.
“Your Highness! Why would you say such a thing…”
However, instead of replying, he simply smiled slyly with his exquisitely chiseled features and dreamy heterochromia eyes.
“Devoncia!”
Skylar shouted, completely drowning out her protests. It was a voice of such fury that it made my hair stand on end.
Devoncia’s gaze shifted from Ariel to the man beyond her. His face, still wearing a somewhat amused expression, appeared sinister.
“Skylar, how can you scream like that when there’s a guest here? It seems that you really should learn manners again.”
“You b*stard.”
“You should fix that mouth of yours as well, my younger brother, who has a lower status than a b*stard.”
Crash!
Skylar, unable to contain his anger, kicked the partially open door. It was kicked so hard that she could even hear the wooden door cracking.
Ariel, caught in the middle, glanced around before quickly stepping aside.
The two brothers locked eyes in a straight line, yet their gazes couldn’t hold for long and quickly shifted. It was the Crown Prince’s eyes turned toward her first.
“I apologize, Princess. My brother has a rather sensitive disposition, so I hope you can understand even if he behaves out of line.”
As the Crown Prince turned to her as if seeking her understanding, she was afraid of his words and actions. Whether she declined the unwanted concern of the Crown Prince or accepted it, it felt like Skylar might explode, and the situation was so delicate that she didn’t even dare to glance in his direction.
The human behind the title of Crown Prince had become something she now resented.
‘What is wrong with him? To such an extent…’
Ariel averted her gaze to the ground, feeling nowhere else to look.
Devoncia had managed to provoke every misunderstanding and infuriate Skylar. Amidst the immediate anger and the turbulence of Skylar, it felt as though Devoncia was the more volatile, like a ticking time bomb.
‘Whatever the branching penalty is… I wish I hadn’t come.’
She suppressed a sigh and, in contrast, stifled her breath. In the current situation, she wished she could just become an unnoticed screen. However, sadly, she couldn’t become that screen.
“Ariel.”
“Ariel!”
They both called her name at the same time.
Voices with different emotions.
Surprisingly, the louder voice was Devoncia’s. His cheerful tone cut through the lower, subdued voice of Skylar, digging into her ears.
Instinctively, Ariel raised her head towards the loud voice. As she locked eyes with Devoncia, who wore an expression that seemed to praise her for her actions, the faint smile playing on his face sent a chill down her spine.
Bzzzzz—
At the same time, the phone inside her coat’s pocket vibrated. Despite the gentle vibration, it felt remarkably strong to her. She had been called by her name simultaneously, and since she had turned to look at Devoncia first, Skylar’s favorability for her had decreased.
‘After all the effort to raise the favorability, and now it’s disappearing like this…’
Ariel sighed, guessing the notification from the system window just from the vibration.
Even though she turned her gaze towards where Skylar had been a moment ago, it was too late because he had already slammed the door of the secret chamber and left. His anger-filled silhouette rapidly grew distant. She practically stomped towards the door, almost running, and headed for the door.
She wanted to chase after him.
Maybe it was her sense of duty, or perhaps her conscience, but she didn’t want to leave him alone with that similar sense of guilt. After all, she had received a lot of consideration from Skylar up until now.
However, her path was blocked by the doorway.
