Chapter 29.1

The moment I read the contents of the short letter, I shivered and took a step back.

He was an influential figure running an emerging casino, so I thought it wouldn’t be difficult for him to figure out my identity if he chose to do so. But still…

‘Sending a congratulatory gift right after our wedding… It’s scary.’

I felt like I was someone enjoying a vacation only to get an unexpected call from my boss.

Seraph was neither my boss nor did he have any authority over me, though he was a temporary business partner.

Trish, who was puzzled by my displeased reaction, approached me and frowned when he saw the bouquet of flowers that Seraph had sent.

“An ex-boyfriend?”

“Are you kidding me? He’s the casino owner I played a game with back then.”

“You seem quite coveted, after all,” Trish muttered in a low voice, tapping on the fresh lavenders with his fingertips. “I’m a little jealous.”

“Pfft! What? Jealous?”

Jealousy between two men who didn’t even love me?

I couldn’t hold back and burst into laughter. Thanks to that, I received a chilling glare from Trish.

“You received a gift from a stranger whose identity I don’t know, of course I’d be jealous in this position.”

“Ah, of course. You must be feeling uneasy because a suspicious man is hovering around, dear husband.”

I held back my laughter and replied with a smirk, matching Trish’s faithful acting.

Anyway, since Seraph had sent a letter asking me to contact him, I thought I should reply.

“Find the person who sent this gift.”

“Yes, Young Lady.”

After telling a servant to find the person who sent the gift, I asked another servant to bring me paper and a pen.

Since we couldn’t meet in public anyway, I kept the letter short, only saying that I would visit Moonlake in three days.

“Trish, you should come with me.”

He already knew my identity, so he must naturally have figured out that Trish, my partner in gambling, was involved too.

I needed to hear what Seraph had to say and what kind of proposal he wanted to make.

Three days later, we quietly got on the carriage and headed to the Moonlake casino, using a night out as a couple as an excuse.

Trish was known for staying out overnight, so the servants gave him bad looks; however, when they saw I was with him, they seemed to drop their suspicions. Apparently, they thought he would cheat on his new bride in less than a week.

People didn’t change overnight, so it was understandable to doubt, but the excessive attention was burdensome. It made it difficult to move undetected.

‘Even if we are going to the casino together, it won’t look good for the Count and Countess.’

We had to either be more secretive about our outings or make sure the servants stayed quiet to keep it from reaching their ears.

As the private carriage, not carrying the family’s crest, entered the casino street, countless lights lit up to illuminate the dark alleyway.

As we entered Moonlake wearing masks to cover our faces, the employee standing at the entrance greeted us politely.

“Welcome.”

Instead of answering, I handed him the card that Seraph had sent to me.

The employee looked at the handwriting on the card while tilting his head, then nodded and guided us to the back door instead of the main entrance.

“I’ll take you to the VIP room.”

Even the passageway was dark and quiet, different from the main entrance the regular customers used. It was a completely different atmosphere from the noisy casino.

Were we really going to play a game here? Rather, it looked more like a setup to plot something, so I shivered without realizing it.

Trish also looked more nervous than usual, perhaps feeling the same way.

The shiny items that at first glance seemed to be decorated with gold, like the table, the sofa, and the shelves filled with liquor bottles and glasses, were not just for show.

A staff member brought us whiskey and glasses, which we hadn’t even asked for, and then left the room.

But I had no intention of drinking it as it might have poison.

“He’s trying to intimidate us first.”
