Chapter 17.1

“Where did you find someone like that?”

“What do you mean?”

“Sir Trish. He looks like he knows how to play around, and honestly, a man like that doesn’t suit you.”

I didn’t answer Baroness Delphonie’s words and instead just stared blankly at the view beyond the window.

I thought she was a mother who didn’t care much for her daughter, but surprisingly, she had a good grasp of Audrey’s personality. Was it because she was the one who bore her and raised her?

To be honest, I was surprised to find that we got along better than I thought.

“He confessed first. He said he liked me.”

“You shouldn’t believe a man’s confession, but that’s what happened.”

“But thanks to that, I am now in a relationship with someone from Count Malekiah’s family.”

“That’s right. It’s something we couldn’t even dream about.”

Baron Delphonie’s blunt voice interrupted the conversation.

It was hard to find the sincerity in his stiff expression, as if there was something he wasn’t pleased with even though the marriage was going well.

“Is Viscount Lowell that bad?”

“That’s what I’m worried about. He’s going to bother me. He’s an old guy with quite a resentment.”

“Then you can handle it on your own.”

Would glaring at me change the situation? I gently ignored the baron’s gaze.

In the first place, being able to ride in such a comfortable carriage was only possible because of the Count’s favor.

I wanted to stay at the Malekiah mansion from now on, but I had to put up with the idea that it would take at least two months no matter how quickly the ceremony was prepared.

The two-month grace period, the time when we had to endure bothersome daily activities while people gossiped, was also two months.

There were still many unstable factors that wouldn’t let me live with relief in the foreseen future. Our engagement could be broken for unexpected reasons, and if a woman like me who claimed to have his child appeared, our strategy of claiming pure love would go up in smoke.

What was the only way to protect me from such danger?

Money.

‘Shall I make a splash at the casino too?’

I knew it was dangerous, but I thought it might be okay if I asked Trish, who knew that world well, for advice.

I trampled Trish’s pride in front of the ladies last time, so I had to help him at least once so that he could raise his head again.

“Can you give me a new dress?”

“Our family doesn’t have that kind of money.”

“It doesn’t have to be expensive; it just needs to be appropriate. There will be rumors that I wear the same clothes all the time.”

“Don’t be like that, can’t you just give her one? Or should I ask my lover to buy things for our daughter too?”

Hearing his wife’s words, the baron’s face was pleasantly distorted.

Her attitude of not being picky about what she could or couldn’t say in front of her husband was also unusual.

Upon arriving at the Delphonie mansion, the baron tossed us some bills and then went into his room.

As I looked at the place where the baron had disappeared, the baroness, who had approached me at some point, poked me on the side and whispered in my ear.

“Use that as your allowance. I’ll ask Mr. Wellington to get me some dresses for girls your age.”

“Thank you, Mother.”

“When will I act like a parent if not at times like this?”

Then, Baroness Delphonie left the mansion in the same carriage.

As she saw me alone in the hallway, Sarah, who was pretending to clean the stairs from the upper floor, came down.

“Did the conversations go well?” she asked.

“Yeah. The ceremony will be held in two months.”

“I’m glad to hear that.  Everything should be fine in the meantime… Did those two allow it?”

“Since it’s my marriage in the first place, is there anyone I need to get permission from?”

Just as the baroness had committed adultery without her husband’s permission, and the baron had encouraged the arranged marriage without my permission.

I swallowed those words and headed to my room. I was tired today, so I thought I should take a break first.
