I Don't Need the Grand Duke's Regret - Chapter 58
The doctor trailed off in his words. He looked silently at Armilla. The doctor, who now observed a much frailer woman than the last time, soon fell silent.
In the Vittore family, they hadn’t employed a personal doctor like other noble families. It had been that way since the previous Grand Duchess chose to end her own life.
The current Grand Duke had neglected injuries and refrained from calling a doctor even when sick. Consequently, the doctor hadn’t set foot in the Grand Duke’s residence.
Yet, for this woman, the Grand Duke had already summoned the doctor multiple times.
The doctor sensed that the red-haired woman was an important figure to the Grand Duke.
“What is it? Is there a problem?”
Ricardo spoke harshly from behind as the doctor hesitated. The doctor quickly withdrew his hand from the woman’s wrist.
“It’s nothing, Your Grace. I believe I may have been mistaken.”
If the pulse he just checked was accurate, the woman was pregnant. However, the doctor wasn’t sure if he should immediately inform the Grand Duke of this fact.
A significant woman to the Grand Duke was pregnant.
This would cause a major upheaval in Renato.
Therefore, before disclosing it to the Grand Duke, the doctor had to confirm with the woman, the person involved.
Whether she was aware of her pregnancy.
Who the father of the child was.
He couldn’t speak casually about it before confirming. Otherwise, he might lose his head immediately.
“Thanks to Your Grace’s effective first aid, there hasn’t been any shock. Since I’ve treated her, please wait for the patient to wake up.”
“When will she wake up?”
“It’s challenging to say at the moment…”
The doctor broke into a cold sweat. He wanted to escape the bedroom now, feeling the overwhelming pressure from the Grand Duke. However, he opened his mouth, remembering his duty as a doctor.
“It’s currently difficult to determine. At the earliest, maybe a fortnight…”
“One week.”
“Yes?”
The doctor swallowed hard at the firm and decisive statement. Ricardo said while glaring as if ready to devour him.
“Make her wake up within a week.”
“But, but in her current state, waking up within a week is impossible. She’s too frail, and her pulse is weak. Even within a fortnight, it seems challenging…”
“No.”
Ricardo didn’t spare a glance for the doctor. He looked at the pale-faced woman with cold eyes.
“It can’t take longer than a week. I won’t wait longer for this woman.”
“Yes…”
Under the chilling command, the doctor fell silent. As the doctor bent deeply at the waist, Ricardo shifted his gaze away from Armilla to the doctor. Just before he moved, his broad shoulders lifted once, and his heavy voice echoed in the room.
“One week.”
With those words as the last, Ricardo left the bedroom, ignoring the harsh sounds of Armilla’s breathing.
* * *
Armilla was being chased by someone. She ran away and ran again. But the pursuer didn’t stop. So, Armilla desperately ran. She ran wildly without knowing why she was fleeing.
In the end, Armilla’s knees gave out, and she fell. As she tumbled down the snowy slope, when the shadow of the pursuer loomed over her, her eyes flashed open.
“Lady Armira!”
When Armilla opened her eyes, Luce’s cry reached her ears. Armilla blinked her eyes slowly several times then moved her pupils. When her eyes met Luce’s.
“Huwaaah, Lady Armira!”
Luce held Armilla’s hand and clung to her while sobbing loudly. Tears from her eyes fell on Armilla’s bracelet as she blinked a few times.
“You seem lively, Luce.”
Armilla’s ears picked up the cold voice of Missus Catarina.
“Enough of that. She just woke up after a week. Lady Armilla might lose consciousness again because of you.”
“Hu-ugh, kuh, uh, no, don’t… “
Armilla raised her hand and gently wiped Luce’s tear-soaked cheek. After wiping the droplets on her plump cheeks, Luce spoke while sobbing.
“Why, huh, are you waking up now? I was so scared.”
“I’m sorry…”
Armilla, who was responding to Luce, grimaced. When she absentmindedly brought her hand to her neck, she touched the meticulously wrapped bandages.
“I will call the doctor.”
Missus Catarina placed the wet towel on Armilla’s forehead and stood up. Luce, still sobbing, clung tightly to Armilla, not realizing that she should move away.
“It’s not a big injury, I’ll be fine.”
“Okay.”
Armilla responded with a faint smile trying to reassure Luce.
In reality, the moment Armilla opened her eyes just now, she felt defeated.
To be back in the Black Room.
Despite struggling, she was eventually caught.
She wanted to cry.
Ricardo would surely be furious. She disobeyed his orders and acted recklessly.
Armilla couldn’t anticipate how Ricardo’s anger would pour out. She looked around the room with a creeping fear.
Luckily, Ricardo wasn’t in the room. Following Armilla’s gaze, Luce, who was looking around the room, suddenly stood up.
“Are you cold? I’ll make the fire stronger.”
Armilla signaled Luce, who was about to put more wood in the fireplace, to come closer. As Luce approached, Armilla gently brushed her lips.
“His Grace…”
“Yes, His Grace…?”
“Surprising.”
Luce’s cheerful voice and Ricardo’s deep, resonant voice overlapped. When Armilla turned her head, she saw Ricardo standing near the door.
“I didn’t expect you to come looking for me.”
Ricardo spoke with an indifferent tone, staring at Armilla. Leaning against the doorframe with a nonchalant posture, he met her gaze. In that moment when their eyes intertwined in midair, Ricardo lifted the corner of his lips.
Armilla quietly swallowed at Ricardo’s smile. There was a time when she eagerly wanted to see him smile.
But now, his smile was only intimidating.
