Chapter 29.2
“It’s not like I came here specifically because of Miss April. Alchemists naturally enjoy exploring new things. I don’t like coffee, but since you offered me a coffee I haven’t tried before, I just came to try.”
She spoke calmly, her lips twisting as she looked at the glass and the bottle.
“But what is this? You said you were going to show me something new, but were you just making a cafe latte?”
Her voice hinted at a sense of resignation. Hearing that, April quickly exclaimed, afraid that Hannah might leave.
“It’s not just a simple cafe latte! It’s called dalgona coffee.”
“Dalgona… coffee?”
“Yes! Does it sound unfamiliar? Dalgona is a snack made by melting sugar, and dalgona coffee is inspired by that, where sugar is added to espresso and topped with foamed cream.”
“Enough with the explanations and give it to me.”
Hannah said somewhat impatiently. April, noticing her unwavering gaze on the dalgona cream, knew that at least her first impression had passed.
“All right. I’ll give it to you right away.”
After her words, she carefully poured the dalgona cream onto the milk. The thick and creamy dalgona cream spread nicely over the milk. She then topped it off with dalgona pieces and offered it to Hannah.
“First, try the dalgona piece first before mixing the cream and milk well before drinking.”
Hannah held up the largest piece of dalgona up in the air and observed it.
“This is made only with sugar? If you dissolve the sugar, it will become syrup.”
“More precisely, it’s made by adding baking soda to melted sugar.”
“This is what happens when you add baking soda? This is my first time hearing about it.”
Hannah muttered with a softened voice as she put a piece of dalgona into her mouth. Her gray eyes widened.
“It’s like a bittersweet cloud. It’s a taste I’ve never experienced before.”
“That’s great. Now, why don’t you try the coffee?”
“Wait a minute.”
Instead of mixing the cream and milk, Hannah scooped a bit of the cream with a teaspoon and tasted it before her shoulder shivered.
“Ugh, this is bitter and sweet.”
April tried to suppress her laughter.
“Of course. It’s made with sugar added to espresso, so it’s natural. Just eating the cream alone might be a bit strong in flavor.”
Hannah furrowed her brow and muttered.
“I’m not really looking forward to this.”
“Don’t say that. Give it a stir and try it.”
April nervously clenched and unclenched her hands.
Fortunately, Hannah seemed more curious about the novelty of the concoction than disliking coffee as she diligently stirred the coffee with a spoon. Eventually, when the cream was well mixed and the milk had turned slightly brown, she cautiously took a sip.
“Hm? Hmm?”
Then, hearing she made incomprehensible noises, April tightly clasped her hands together.
‘…What does it mean?’
However, Hannah continued to drink a few more sips without saying anything. Each minute and second felt like a year passing by.
“Um…”
Finally, unable to wait any longer, just as April opened her mouth, Hannah abruptly stood up from her seat and firmly grasped her hand.
“How on earth did you say you made this?”
“Yes?”
“I’ve never tasted anything like this in my life! This is coffee? No, I mean, I can taste the coffee, but it’s like the smooth milk swirling in my mouth is more prominent. Coffee can taste this good!”
“Swirling…”
That makes sense. After all, it took her thirty minutes of whisking to make it.
“Plus, the flavor is smooth and sweet, which makes it seem like a good alternative when you don’t feel like eating.”
She swallowed the thought of mentioning, ‘Wouldn’t it be too sweet as a meal replacement?’ In reality, April felt more fear than elation about whether the dalgona coffee was a success. It was because Hannah’s reaction was much more intense than she had anticipated. It was unusual for her eyes to sparkle like that.
So, she tried to subtly pull her hand away, though Hannah held on tighter, thwarting her attempt.
“Could you share the recipe with me? I’ll buy the recipe from you.”
‘M-money? How much should I ask for? It’s a recipe, so maybe a hundred gold?’
No. This was something she could use for the rest of her life, so shouldn’t it be less than her monthly salary? Then, how about a thousand gold? Wouldn’t that be too expensive?
‘…Wait, what am I even thinking? Is money the problem right now?’
April, who had been thinking subconsciously, eventually shook her head. Money? Of course, it was important. Still, that wasn’t what mattered most right now. She then snapped back to attention and opened her eyes properly.
“This recipe is very simple. I can tell you without you having to give me money.”
Hannah became wary at her words.
“Why? Do you want something else from me?”
“No! I can give you the recipe without any exchange. However…”
“However?”
“If you liked that coffee, why don’t you go into the coffee business with me?”
