Chapter 266

From the moment the demon appeared before Sera, everything had been decided.
Helios knew well why Sera, curious about all the demon had said, had not directly asked him even until now.
She was just waiting until he was ready to speak.
‘If only I could be a bit more selfish.’
“Your Majesty, are you alright?”
One of the knights watching him from the corridor cautiously asked.
Helios gestured for the approaching knight to stay back and shook his head.
As he was about to move again, Helios caught Raphael walking towards him from the end of the corridor.
Why was Raphael here?
The sense of dread in Helios’s eyes deepened further.
The only person staying in that room at the end of the corridor was Sera.
He hastened his steps, and Raphael avoided eye contact from the start.
“Raphael?”
“Heli. Truly, I’m sorry.”
Helios’s eyes narrowed sharply. His face turned cold instantly as he grabbed Raphael’s arm.
“What are you sorry for? Why did you come from there? Raphael?”
Raphael winced as if the grip on his arm was painful but remained silent.
“Did you meet Sera?”
“Yes.”
“What did you say to her that you’re sorry?”
Helios’s sharp tone made Raphael close his eyes as if he anticipated the reaction.
“…The truth you couldn’t say…”
As Raphael’s words dropped, Helios’s eyes turned icy cold.
“Couldn’t say?”
“……”
“Raphael?”
Out of character for him, Helios briefly scoffed the moment he realized Raphael had acted on his own.
His eyes became filled with anger as he glared at Raphael.
He barely held back the urge to reach out, as sharp divine power leaked from his body.
Grinding his teeth, he spoke in a quiet, menacing voice.
“It seems you’ve beaten me to it with a different story than what I was about to say.”
Raphael’s silence was an affirmation.
Helios stared at Raphael for a moment before reluctantly letting go.
“Heli.”
As if he had more to say, Raphael reached out and grabbed Helios’s wrist.
“You did not say anything, so it was my duty to say it. That’s what I’m here for—”
“Let go.”
Helios, scowling, roughly pushed Raphael’s hand away and started running towards where Sera was.
* * *
The story Raphael told her was a bit far-fetched and hard to believe at first.
However, as he added more details, Sera began to realize how everything that had happened fit together.
‘To be the one who could seal the demon…’
It was bitter to think that her inability to use magic was due to such a capability.
She would have preferred to have the power of a powerful mage or a saint, not to be someone reborn with such a disappointing ability.
The reason her body glowed was because she had intrinsically started to try and absorb the demon.
It was possible without any special incantation because she had already been cursed by a demon once at the imperial villa.
Sera recalled the last part of her conversation with Raphael.
“Then, is that why I fell ill in the middle? My hand turned black, and then the pain started.”
“According to the mages, that seems to be the case. Absorbing a demon into your body is akin to a curse.”
“Then, if I hadn’t been treated with divine power… would I be dead now?”
At her words, Raphael nodded silently with a bitter expression, not answering directly.
She did not ask what would happen after sealing the demon inside her.
For a while, Sera and Raphael maintained an uncomfortable silence.
Understanding why he came to see her, and feeling he wouldn’t have brought up his prepared speech first, Sera decided to speak instead.
“The demon knew about my relationship with His Majesty and kidnapped Their Highnesses as a sort of insurance to negotiate with me, to prevent me from recklessly trying to seal it or perhaps to hide me away completely. You came to me now because… you thought His Majesty would never ask me to make such a sacrifice, right?”
“Yes. His Majesty seems to be considering going to war.”
“…War. Do you think there’s no chance?”
“The allied nations have stepped forward to participate, and the neighboring countries won’t stay idle either. But…”
“It will be a long war, and it’s not exactly a good solution. The longer it lasts, the less guaranteed the safety of Their Highnesses becomes.”
Muttering to herself as she sorted her thoughts, Raphael quietly waited for her to finish.
He answered all her questions diligently, and eventually, Sera was left feeling completely hollow.
Probably, Helios’s insistence on her entering the palace and his sometimes uneasy looks were all for this reason.
‘It must have been hard to say.’
Asking for a sacrifice, either for the nation or himself, would not sound right to anyone, so Helios must have hesitated again and again.
Wondering when and how to bring up the topic, she had told Helios she would do anything to help without knowing any of this.
‘Ha. Really…’
Tears welled up, and Sera looked up at the ceiling.
There was only one decision she could make.
That’s why she had stepped forward to tell Raphael her decision.
And she had to tell Helios about her decision soon.
Knowing how he might react, Sera felt a lump in her throat but wanted to face it with composure.
“Lady Popo, His Majesty is—”
“Sera, I’m coming in.”
As the maid was interrupted, Sera immediately recognized his voice. It’s Helios.
Quickly wiping her tears, Sera approached the door.
“Sera…”
“Your Majesty…”
Helios stood at the door, his face pale.
