Battle Divorce! - Chapter 21
Chapter 11.1
Though he’d already explained the reasoning when she first started the mission, his explanation had been vague at best. Essentially, they thought it prudent to keep an eye on someone from the royalist faction, “just in case” And who better for the role than the royal family’s hunting dog himself?
But this time, she wanted real answers.
“Everyone else avoided the role like the plague, so I planted you here, just in case things went south.”
And there he went with the same evasive response. Daisy couldn’t shake the feeling that they had a hidden agenda lurking beneath the surface. It all felt suspicious.
“So you anticipated something like this might happen?”
“I said it was ‘just in case.’ But hey, at least he’s handsome, right? You’ve got a thing for good-looking guys, don’t you?”
“Well, yeah, I mean…”
To be honest, Maxim von Waldeck was undeniably attractive.
He radiated masculinity while remaining sharply dressed, like a well-bred stallion groomed to perfection. It might sound absurd, but he was the kind of man you’d want to hold onto, maybe even take for a ride at least once.
But that was just her womanly instincts talking.
She wasn’t anything like Maxim von Waldeck, who had nothing but s*x on his mind.
“What does his looks have to do with the mission?”
She was practical. A person whose reason always won out over fleeting instincts.
She had a family at the orphanage depending on her, and with retirement already in her sights, she wasn’t about to get caught up in any complicated missions.
“You know, Easy, other agents have to do far worse with men who are much less appealing.”
Fair point. Undercover agents who posed as mistresses didn’t get to pick their targets. If the mission called for seducing a pot-bellied, middle-aged slob, well… they were expected to get the job done, no matter what.
Not that Daisy had any intention of going that far. Not in the past, not now, and definitely not in the future.
“Still, if you have to go through with it, wouldn’t it be better to do it with a handsome guy rather than someone ugly?”
“…”
“You said your dream was to live a normal life and experience romance like everyone else. Think of this as practice. You’ve already kissed him, so if you see it as just going a little further—”
“And why exactly do you think you get to decide what I do with my body? Do you have a death wish?”
“Alright, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I’ll come up with a plan soon. Just give me a little time, okay?”
When Daisy’s eyes burned a hole into his skull, Count Therese clasped his hands together in a pleading motion.
“If you’re just going to keep spouting nonsense, I suggest you keep quiet.”
“Hah, that sharp tongue of yours, girl. You think you can get away with saying whatever you want to me.”
“If you want people to respect you, then perhaps you should start by behaving in a way that’s respectable.”
She could care less if he clicked his tongue in irritation, she wasn’t about to hold back. Honestly, she was barely keeping herself from cursing him out.
“It’s not like I’ve been lazing around. Do you know how much I worry about you on a regular basis? Here.”
Count Therese handed her a document. It contained information on Maxim von Waldeck.
“You should’ve given me this earlier.”
“Yes, well, I didn’t expect the bastard to make it back alive. And with his extreme aversion to anyone outside his inner circle, there wasn’t much intel I could gather on him. Anywho, my apologies.”
There’s always a reason behind every grave, Daisy muttered under her breath as her eyes skimmed the report.
[ Maxim von Waldeck, Age 26 ]
[ The illegitimate son of Princess Helene, the sole daughter among the many sons of Konrad II. His father was Sir Jaden Kleist, the princess’s personal guard. Maxim von Waldeck’s maternal uncle is the former Grand Duke of Waldeck, Princess Helene’s older brother. ]
Daisy was already roughly aware of this.
[ Made a name for himself as a mercenary following the uprising of the savages in the Western continent. His previous whereabouts remain unknown. ]
[ After a grand victory in a skirmish against Robeil, he caught the royal family’s attention and was admitted to the Royal Military Academy. Advanced rapidly and graduated at the top of his class before joining the Royal Guard. ]
[ Recognized for his achievements as Commander of the Royal Special Forces, he was awarded a medal and promoted up a rank. ]
Daisy’s husband certainly had an impressive record.
[ Known for extracting confessions from spies and prisoners through brutal torture. ]
[ Prisoners from Robeil were executed by firing squad immediately after confession. ]
Good grief. If her cover was blown, her death would be anything but swift or painless.
So I’m supposed to sit around and watch this guy, just waiting for some uncertain plan to come through?
Unbelievable. Daisy’s expression hardened as she continued reading.
