Chapter 21.1
After fixing her makeup, Leilia got up and walked over to Cassel.
“I’m all ready.”
His cheeks slightly reddened as he looked at her dress and makeup. He was a little dazed for a moment before regaining his composure and opening his mouth.
“It’s beautiful.”
Even if his compliment was a customary phrase, she liked it.
“Thank you.”
Seeing her delighted, he turned his head, with his cheeks flushing even to his ears. Then, as if he had composed himself, he took her hand and kissed the back of it. It was the finest gesture of courtesy a man could offer to a woman.
“Shall we go?”
At his words, she nodded her head.
The two of them walked affectionately through the mansion together.
Due to his attitude, Aaron, who had mistreated her and other courtiers who used to belittle her, glanced at her with uncomfortable gazes. It was as if they were looking at her, questioning why she was there or whether she had the right to be there.
Despite the fact that Leilia remained unfazed by such an atmosphere, Cassel’s expression hardened noticeably.
“All the belongings have been moved back to their original places.”
Aaron spoke cautiously.
“Were you one of His Majesty’s close entourage?”
Cassel asked him directly.
“Yes, I was.”
His expression grew even more grim at the answer. Looking at him like that, she suspected that there might be something troubling between him and the Emperor.
As he climbed into the carriage, he turned his gaze towards her.
“When did they start treating you like that?”
While he gently brushed her cheek as they were seated in the carriage, she could feel kindness in his gaze, which he first inquired about her well-being.
Thinking that she might get lost in that gaze, Leilia averted her eyes and simply responded calmly.
“I think it’s been like that since the very beginning.”
“I see.”
“You know, a prince’s wife assumes the role temporarily for a while when he’s on the battlefield, and then she steps away from being a part of the imperial family when her husband dies. And even if the prince returns alive, he’d welcome a new wife as the new wife will be chosen from the families of the crown prince’s entourage.”
The corners of her mouth twitched with bitterness.
“So, I was never truly a part of the imperial family.”
However, Cassel refused to divorce.
As if he wouldn’t abide by such traditions.
“May I make one request?”
“What is it?”
“If you intend to continue living as a couple with me, I hope you won’t bring the mistress into our home.”
This was the least he could do for her.
During her childhood, her father had brought his lover home when she was with her mother. Witnessing how that had shattered her mother, Leilia had seen that torment all too clearly. That was why that pain was so terrifying. She thought it would’ve been less heartbreaking if he met with the mistress outside instead.
At her words, Cassel fell silent.
He stared at her with a strange gaze before whispering by her lips.
“I want to kiss you.”
“But then my makeup…”
“Yes, that’s why I’m holding back…”
Without saying a word, he gently sucked on her finger. Overwhelmed by the peculiar sensation, Leilia lowered her gaze.
“I’ll explain the circumstances of the mistress story soon.”
He finally lifted his lips from her palm and whispered.
“And the story about the mistress, which I brought up while refusing the divorce, remains valid even after we return.”
He uttered each word with force as if imprinting them onto her.
“There will be no divorce between us.”
After saying that, he swept his hand through Leilia’s hair.

The carriage announced its arrival at the imperial palace. Cassel disembarked first and helped Leilia down, and she stepped down from the carriage without stepping on her long dress. Immediately, he stood by her side and escorted her.
They were behaving not just as a couple in formality but as a real couple.
‘…He said he won’t get a divorce.’
But why?
She narrowed her eyes.
‘Why wouldn’t he go to the person he loves?’
Was he trying to forget that person and try to be with her? Or was he intending to keep his marriage with her and keep that woman as his lover? It felt like her head was going to explode at the thought of it.
As if sensing her perplexed gaze, Cassel spoke softly.
“What are you thinking in that little head of yours?”
“That’s…”
“When you stare at me with those complex eyes, it makes me curious.”
However, she couldn’t be honest with him.
“I’m just curious about how you’ll behave from now on.”
Since it wasn’t entirely wrong, that was why she responded like this. While on the other hand, Cassel tilted his head slightly before looking at Leilia, seemingly pondering her words. His smile was tender as he gazed at her.
“That will depend on how His Majesty approaches it.”
He replied cryptically.
